AI Product Description Generator
Enter your product details and get three compelling descriptions - short, medium, and long - tailored to your chosen tone.
Product details
Why product descriptions matter
The product description is where a shopper decides whether to buy. A good one does three jobs at once: it answers the practical questions (what is it, what is it made of, will it fit my need), it turns the specs into a benefit, and it reflects your brand so the page feels trustworthy. Thin or generic copy leaves all three on the table, and on a catalog of hundreds of products that gap compounds fast.
Descriptions also do double duty for search. Clear, specific copy that uses the words shoppers actually search for helps your product pages rank and gives ad and email campaigns ready-made language to pull from. The payoff of writing them well is that the same words work on the page, in the ad, and in the inbox.
How this generator works
Enter your product name, its category, the key features that make it worth buying, and the tone you want. The generator turns those inputs into three ready-to-use descriptions: a short version for listings and category grids, a medium version for the main product page, and a long version for detailed pages, ads, or email. Copy any of them with one click, then edit to taste.
The more specific your key features, the better the output. "100% organic cotton, pre-shrunk, 8 colors, machine washable" gives the model far more to work with than "nice t-shirt", and the descriptions come back sharper for it.
When to use a product description generator
Reach for a generator whenever the writing is the bottleneck, not the thinking. The four most common moments for ecommerce teams are launching new SKUs at speed, refreshing underperforming product pages before a campaign, creating variant-level copy without rewriting from scratch, and pulling authentic voice out of customer reviews and into listing copy. In each case the raw material already exists; the tool just compresses the time between having it and shipping polished copy.
Writing descriptions for new SKUs is the obvious one. A catalog of fifty new products is fifty blank pages, and momentum dies fast when every listing starts from nothing. A generator hands you a structured first draft for each, so the job becomes editing. Refreshing underperforming product pages is the second: before you put spend behind a product, a sharper description with a clear benefit hook often lifts conversion more cheaply than more traffic. The gap matters, because 46% of US shoppers will not buy a product when they cannot find the detailed information they are looking for online, per Salsify's 2022 consumer research. Variant-level copy is the third: keep the core description and adjust only the details that change with colour or size. Pulling voice from reviews is the fourth, and it is why the review field above exists.
The cost of getting this wrong compounds quietly. A thin description costs more than one sale; multiplied across a catalog it drags conversion on every page at once, weakens the ad and email copy that pulls language from the listing, and leaves search engines nothing distinctive to rank. Lean teams feel it hardest, because the store owner who is also the marketer rarely has a spare afternoon to rewrite two hundred listings. That is the practical case for a generator: it removes the writing bottleneck so the scarce human time goes to judgment, which means adding the details only you know and checking the copy is true. At catalog scale the same logic points at automating product descriptions outright.
Who it is built for
The tool is aimed at anyone who has to ship product copy without a copywriter on call.
- Ecommerce store owners. Write descriptions for new SKUs at speed, so no product page ships half-finished, and keep a consistent voice across a growing catalog.
- Marketers and copywriters. Skip the blank page. Generate a strong first draft with a benefit hook, then edit it to match brand voice and campaign angle.
- Amazon and marketplace sellers. Turn a bare spec list into scannable, benefit-led copy that helps a listing convert and stand out from the identical manufacturer text every other seller is running.
- Small business owners. Get professional-sounding product copy without hiring a copywriter, so a lean team can launch and update listings on its own.
- Drop-shippers. Replace the duplicate supplier description every other store is running with unique copy that gives search engines a reason to rank your page.
- Variant-heavy brands. Create variant-level copy without starting from scratch each time: keep the core description and adjust the details that actually differ.
How to write a product description that sells
Whether you write it yourself or start from the generator, the same principles apply. Lead with the benefit, not the spec: say what the feature does for the buyer. Be concrete and specific, because vague superlatives ("amazing quality") are forgettable while details ("survives a 6-foot drop") stick. Write to one customer in the voice they use, handle the obvious objection before it is asked, and close with a nudge to act. Keep it scannable with short sentences and the essentials up top.
Structure for scannability in particular, because shoppers do not read listings top to bottom. Nielsen Norman Group found that writing web copy to be concise, scannable and objective raised measured usability by 124%, per its research on how users read on the web. As Jakob Nielsen put it:
"People rarely read Web pages word by word; instead, they scan the page, picking out individual words and sentences."
Put that into practice with short sentences, a benefit-led opening line, and the essential details near the top so the scanning eye catches them first. Optimise for search inside the description by using the specific words shoppers actually search for, in natural sentences and never a keyword pile, which gives search engines unique content to index. The manufacturer blurb is already on every other store selling the product. Then turn each spec into a benefit, so "3000mAh battery" becomes "a full day of charge on one top-up", and answer the obvious objection before it is asked, because "runs small, so size up" beats a silent gap that sends the shopper to the reviews. If you want the same principles applied to ad copy, the free hook generator builds hooks and headlines the same way.
Before and after: a flat spec list vs. a benefit hook
The difference is easiest to see side by side. The "before" is what most listings default to; the "after" leads with what the buyer gets.
Before
"Vitamin C serum. 30ml bottle. Contains 15% vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E. Suitable for all skin types. Apply daily."
After
"Wake up to visibly brighter skin. GlowDrop's 15% vitamin C serum fades dullness in 14 days, while hyaluronic acid keeps skin plump and hydrated. Lightweight, non-greasy, and gentle enough for daily use on every skin type."
Both describe the same product. Only one of them tells the shopper what changes for them. The "after" converts better because it is specific: "premium quality, great value" is noise every competitor also writes, while "visibly brightens dull skin in 14 days" is concrete, believable, and answers the question the buyer is actually asking. Paste real reviews into the field above and the generator grounds the copy in the words your customers already use, which is exactly the language that resonates because it mirrors how buyers already think about the product.
Choosing the right tone
Tone should match the product and the audience. Professional suits tools, B2B, and considered purchases where trust matters most. Casual fits everyday consumer goods and younger audiences. Luxury leans on restraint and aspiration for premium products. Playful works for fun, impulse-friendly items. Technical is best when buyers compare specs and want precision. Pick the one that matches how your customers already talk about the category, and keep it consistent across your catalog so the brand reads as one voice.
Writing product descriptions for Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon and Etsy
The same product needs different copy on each platform, because each one gives you a different set of fields and truncates them in a different place. Generate the description once above, then trim it to fit. These are the conventions that actually change what you write.
Shopify
Shopify separates the customer-facing description from the search snippet. The description field is effectively unlimited, so the medium output above usually drops straight in, with the long version below the fold for considered purchases. The part people get wrong is the "Search engine listing" panel underneath: its page title field takes up to 70 characters, and Shopify's own SEO guidance is where to check the current field behaviour. Keep the title around 50 to 60 characters so Google does not clip it. Shopify's meta description box accepts far more than Google will show, so write to roughly 160 characters and treat the rest of the box as unusable space.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce is the one platform that genuinely wants two lengths, which is why the generator returns three. Its docs describe the two separate fields plainly: the "Product description" is "for the detailed description of your product" and renders on the single product page, while the "product short description" is "a succinct summary of the long description" that "typically appears next to product imagery on product listing pages". So paste the long output into Description and the short or medium output into Short description. Do not leave the short description empty, because it is what shoppers read on your shop and category pages, where most browsing actually happens.
Amazon
Amazon is the strictest, and it is the platform where copying the generator's output unedited will get you rejected. Titles cap at 200 characters in most categories, though several are lower, apparel commonly around 125, and Amazon itself recommends closer to 80 so the title survives on mobile. You get five bullet points, each roughly 10 to 255 characters, and the bullets do more selling than the description does. The description field itself caps at 2,000 characters and must be plain text, since Amazon removed HTML support in July 2021, so any formatting from the long output needs stripping. Category style guides in Seller Central override all of this, so pull yours before you write.
Etsy
Etsy titles run to 140 characters, but only the first 40 or so are visible in mobile search results, which is where most Etsy browsing happens, so the searchable words belong at the very front, ahead of your brand name. The description field is generous at 10,000 characters, and the opening two lines are what shoppers see before they tap to expand, so the short output earns its place at the top with the long version underneath. Etsy also gives you 13 tags of up to 20 characters each; they are a separate keyword surface from the description, and repeating your title verbatim across them wastes twelve of the thirteen.
If you are doing this across a whole catalog, the per-platform trimming is the part that does not scale by hand, and automating product descriptions is the way out.
SEO optimization for product descriptions
Product descriptions are one of the few places on an ecommerce site where you control original text on a page that is otherwise a template, a price and a photo. That makes them the practical lever for product-page search, and it is worth being precise about what actually helps.
- Use the shopper's words, once or twice, in real sentences. Pick the phrase people would actually type, then use it naturally in the opening line and once more in the body. Repeating it eight times does nothing except make the copy unreadable.
- Write the meta description separately. It is a click-through pitch, not the first 160 characters of your description. Around 160 characters is the working budget, whatever the field allows.
- Keep every description unique. This is the single biggest win available to most stores. Running the manufacturer's stock text means dozens of shops carry identical copy and none of them is the obvious one to rank.
- Answer the questions the buyer would otherwise search for. Fit, materials, care, compatibility, sizing. A description that resolves those keeps the shopper on the page.
- Do not let it thin out at scale. Fifty products with two specific sentences each beat fifty products sharing one padded paragraph.
Does Google penalise AI-written product descriptions?
Not for being AI-written. Google's guidance targets content produced primarily to manipulate rankings, and it says appropriate use of AI is fine, so an AI first draft you have checked, corrected and made specific to your product is treated like any other copy. The thing that actually gets punished is what mass-generated copy usually is: near-identical, unverified and generic across a whole catalog. So edit the output before it ships.
AI tools for ecommerce product descriptions: what this one does and does not do
Most tools in this category do a similar core job and differ at the edges, so it is worth saying plainly where this one sits before you build a workflow on it.
What it does. Three lengths from one set of inputs, so you are not regenerating to get a listing-grid line and a product-page paragraph. A tone control that changes the writing itself. An optional audience it writes to but never names in the copy. And an optional review field, which is the part most generators skip: paste real customer sentences and the copy is built from the language your buyers already use. Three free generations per visit, no sign-up.
What it does not do. It does not read a product photo, it does not write in languages other than English, it does not export a CSV, and it does not process a whole catalog in one pass. Some tools in this category offer those; this one is a single-product drafting tool and is honest about it. If bulk is the actual requirement, that is a different job, and the other free tools plus catalog-scale automation are the better starting points.
Common mistakes to avoid
A few habits quietly cost sales. Copying the manufacturer's stock description means dozens of stores run identical text, so yours never stands out and search engines have no reason to favour it. Listing specs with no benefit leaves the shopper to work out why any of it matters. Empty superlatives like "best in class" read as noise because every competitor says the same thing. Walls of text hide the one detail that would close the sale, and a tone that lurches from playful to corporate across the catalog makes the brand feel unreliable.
The fix for all of them is the same: write specific, benefit-led copy in a consistent voice, unique to each product. Start from the generator, then add the details only you know about the product and the customer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a product description generator?
A product description generator is a free tool that turns a product name and a few key details into polished, ready-to-use ecommerce copy in seconds. You enter the product name, its category, the features that make it worth buying, and a tone, and it returns editable descriptions you can drop straight into a listing, product page, ad, or brief. No sign-up is required to try it.
How does the AI product description generator work?
Enter your product name, category, key features, and preferred tone. The AI analyzes your inputs and generates three descriptions - short, medium, and long - optimized for ecommerce product pages, ads, and email campaigns.
What tones can I choose for product descriptions?
You can choose from Professional (corporate and polished), Casual (friendly and approachable), Luxury (premium and aspirational), Playful (fun and energetic), or Technical (precise and spec-led). Each tone adjusts the language, word choice, and overall feel of the generated descriptions.
Can I use the generated descriptions commercially?
Yes. All descriptions generated by this tool are free to use for any commercial purpose including product listings, advertisements, email marketing, and social media posts. We recommend reviewing and customizing the output to match your brand voice.
How long should a product description be?
There is no single correct length; match it to where the copy will appear. A short line works for listings and category grids, a medium paragraph suits the main product page, and a longer version fits detailed pages, ads, and email. This generator produces all three so you can use the right length in each place.
Can I use it for Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon and Etsy listings?
Yes, and the three lengths exist for exactly that reason. Shopify wants one description plus a separate search snippet written to about 160 characters. WooCommerce wants two: the long output in Description and the short in Short description, which is what shows on shop and category pages. Amazon caps the description at 2,000 characters of plain text and does most of its selling in five bullet points. Etsy allows 140-character titles but shows only the first 40 or so in mobile search, so the searchable words go first. Generate once, then trim to the platform.
Does Google penalise AI-written product descriptions?
Not for being AI-written. Google's guidance targets content made primarily to manipulate rankings, and it says appropriate use of AI is fine, so an AI first draft you have checked and made specific to your product is treated like any other copy. What does get punished is what mass-generated copy usually is: near-identical, unverified and generic across a whole catalog. Edit the output, keep every description unique, and add the details only you know.
Can it write from a product photo, or write my whole catalog at once?
No to both. This is a single-product drafting tool: it takes typed details, not images, writes in English only, and has no CSV export or bulk mode. It gives you three free generations per visit. If you need descriptions across a whole catalog, that is a different job than drafting one listing.
Do AI product descriptions help with SEO?
They can, when they are specific and use the language shoppers actually search for. Clear, detailed descriptions give search engines real content to index. Review the output for accuracy, add details only you know, and write unique copy for every product in the catalog.
One description done. Now imagine your whole catalog.
This tool writes one product at a time. Selzee's AI content team writes descriptions, ad copy, and email sequences across your whole catalog, in your brand voice and grounded in what your customers actually say, so good copy scales with you.
