What the sizes here come from
Instagram Help, photo resolution for the 1080 width and the four shapes: 1080 x 1080, 1080 x 1350, 1080 x 1440 and 1080 x 566.
Meta's Instagram feed ads guide for a feed ad: 4:5 at 1440 x 1800, and 4:5 as its tallest shape.
The examples on this page were made by the same code the tool runs.
The short answer
- An Instagram mockup is a picture of your image as it would look in the Instagram feed: the name, the picture, the like, comment, share and save icons, the likes and the caption. You use it to show a post or an ad before it goes live.
- This generator draws the post at 1080 pixels wide, the width Instagram keeps a photo at, in four shapes: 1080 x 1080, 1080 x 1350, 1080 x 1440 and 1080 x 566 (Instagram Help). The download is a PNG of the whole post, not only the picture.
- Switch to Ad and it adds "Sponsored" and a button bar, the way a feed ad shows. Meta asks for 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 for an Instagram feed ad (Meta's Instagram feed ads guide).
- The same tool makes an Instagram post mockup and an Instagram ad mockup. Nothing is uploaded: the picture stays in your browser.

Six ads from the Selzee gallery, dropped into the generator and saved with Download. They show two posts and one ad in light mode, one post and one ad in dark mode, and one wide post, in all four shapes.
Post or ad: what the Ad switch adds
The same picture, once as a post and once as an ad.
Post
The name, the picture, the icons, the likes and the caption. Use it for an organic post, a grid plan or a portfolio.
Ad
The same post with "Sponsored" under the name and a button bar under the picture. Use it to show an ad before you pay for it.
Instagram post sizes the mockup uses
The picture inside the mockup is always 1080 pixels wide. Its height sets the shape.
| Size in pixels | Use it for | |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | A square post. Safe for any picture with the subject in the middle. |
| 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | A portrait post. It is the tallest shape a Meta feed ad can use, so it takes the most room in the feed. |
| 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 | The tallest post Instagram keeps. Organic only: Meta's feed ads stop at 4:5. |
| 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 | The widest post Instagram keeps. Small on a phone, so use it for wide scenes only. |
Sources: Instagram Help, photo resolution (a width of 1080 with a height between 566 and 1440) and Meta's Instagram feed ads guide (4:5 at 1440 x 1800 for an ad). To cut your picture to one of these sizes first, use the Instagram image resizer. Verified 2026-10-20.
What an Instagram mockup is for
A mockup answers one question before you post: does this look right in the feed? A flat picture on a white page does not tell you that. The same picture under a name, with a caption and the icons round it, does.
- Client approval: send the post as it will look, not a loose file, and get a yes or a change in one round.
- Ad previews before you spend: check the picture, the first line of the caption and the button together.
- Portfolio and case studies: show your designs in the place they ran.
- Pitch decks: put a planned post on a slide so the room sees the idea, not a layout file.
- Your own grid plan: see if the next post fits the ones before it.
How to make an Instagram mockup
-
Drop your picture
Choose a file, drag it onto the box or paste a screenshot. Your browser reads it. It is never uploaded.
-
Pick the shape, the type and the mode
Choose 1:1, 4:5, 3:4 or 1.91:1, Post or Ad, Light or Dark. Drag the picture to choose what the crop keeps.
-
Edit the text and download
Open Edit the text for the name, badge, caption, likes and button. Then download a 1080 wide PNG.
How to make a mockup look real
-
Use your real name
A handle like yourbrand reads as a template. Your own handle reads as a post.
-
Add a profile picture
Your logo in the circle does more for realism than any other detail.
-
Write the caption you will post
Only the first two lines show before "more", so test the line that has to work.
-
Pick a believable likes count
Use a number your account gets. A huge count on a small brand looks fake.
-
Match light or dark to the viewer
Show a client the mode they use on their own phone.

How we checked
Last checked: 20 October 2026. The four shapes and the 1080 width come from Instagram Help on photo resolution, and the ad size from Meta's Instagram feed ads guide, both read at the source that day.
On 20 October 2026, we ran the generator on the six gallery ads on this page and on two test pictures, 1200 x 800 and 1080 x 1350. We made every shape, as a post and as an ad, in light and dark mode. We ran it in headless Chrome at a laptop width and a phone width.
- The size: every PNG is 1080 wide, and the picture inside it is the shape's 1080 wide size.
- The crop: the picture fills the frame, centred, and a drag moves it only as far as the picture goes.
- The caption: two lines, then "more", the way the feed cuts it.
- The ad: "Sponsored" and the button bar appear only on Ad.
- The privacy: no network request is made with the picture.
