The short answer
- JPEG and JPG are one format. .jpg is the short form of the same file extension (MDN's image format guide).
- Meta takes JPG or PNG for image ads, and LinkedIn takes JPG, PNG or GIF. Neither lists AVIF (Meta's image ad specs, LinkedIn's single image ad specs).
- JPG has no transparency (MDN's image format guide), so this converter puts see-through parts of an AVIF on white.

AVIF to JPG or AVIF to JPEG: one conversion
More people search for "AVIF to JPG" than for "AVIF to JPEG", but it is the same conversion. JPEG is the format, named after the Joint Photographic Experts Group, and .jpg and .jpeg are both file extensions for it (MDN's image format guide). Any app that opens one opens the other.
This converter names its files .jpg, the form most cameras and apps use. Rename a file to .jpeg if a form asks for it; the bytes are the same.

Measured on 5 November 2026 on the BE SADE Liebe ring ad (1024 x 1024), saved as JPG at each quality with Pillow 11.3. The same picture as AVIF at quality 60 was 33 KB. Your browser's encoder gives similar, not identical, sizes. Verified 2026-11-05.
What an AVIF file is
AVIF is the AV1 Image File Format, published by the Alliance for Open Media (the AVIF specification). It packs a picture into far fewer bytes than JPG: MDN puts lossy AVIF at around 50% smaller than JPEG at similar quality (MDN's image format guide). That is why websites and online stores serve it, and why a picture you save from one can arrive as .avif.
An iPhone photo in HEIF or HEIC comes from the same family of formats. Our HEIF to JPG converter handles those.
When you need an AVIF as a JPG
For a marketer, JPG is the safe output: every ad platform, email tool, marketplace and phone takes it, and it is much smaller than a PNG of the same picture.
- Meta ads: image ads take JPG or PNG up to 30 MB, at 1440 x 1800 recommended (Meta's image ad specs).
- LinkedIn ads: single image ads take JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB (LinkedIn's single image ad specs). A JPG at quality 92 stays far under that for a normal ad.
- Product photos: a JPG of a product shot saved from a store page uploads anywhere a photo is asked for.

- The format check: a file is checked by its first bytes, not its name, so a renamed PNG is refused, and the message names its real format.
- Hostile files: an empty file, a 50 MB file, a damaged AVIF, a text file and a 1 x 1 picture each get one plain message, and the page stays usable.
- The output: every JPG has the same width and height as its AVIF, and see-through pixels land on white, not black.
- The quality slider: a lower quality makes a smaller file, and the files are converted again when it moves.
