Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

An Instagram engagement rate is the share of your followers who interact with a post, calculated as interactions divided by followers times 100. Enter one post below and get the rate, a verdict against the published median, and the same number restated in interactions per thousand followers.

Calculate your Instagram engagement rate

Enter followers, likes and comments. Saves, shares and accounts reached are optional and unlock the reach rate. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is sent to a server, and no account is needed.

One post's numbers

Open the post in the Instagram app, tap View insights, and copy the figures across.

Leave this empty to match the public benchmarks, which mostly count likes and comments only.

What counts as a good engagement rate

The published median is the only benchmark worth grading against, and it is lower than most people expect. Rival IQ put the all-industry median Instagram engagement rate by follower at 0.30% in its 2026 benchmark report, measured as total interactions divided by follower count, down from 0.36% the year before. That is the figure the bands in this calculator are built on: below it you are behind the median, at or above it you are normal, and at double it you are in strong company.

Published benchmarks disagree because their formulas do. Socialinsider reports an average of 0.48% across 70 million posts, counting likes and comments only. Same platform, different arithmetic. Neither figure is wrong, and neither is comparable to the other, which is why this calculator makes saves and shares an optional field instead of quietly folding them in.

What This Calculator Gives You

A percentage on its own does not tell you what to post next. These four outputs do.

Reading

Graded, not just calculated

The result carries a verdict against the published all-industry median, so you know whether 0.4% is a problem or the norm before you change anything.

Action

Interactions per 1,000 followers

A two decimal percentage is abstract at small scale. "Four per thousand" tells you what a good week actually looks like in whole numbers.

Distribution

By reach as well as by followers

Add accounts reached and you get the rate Instagram Insights shows you, which is the one that says whether a post earned its distribution.

Honesty

It flags bad inputs

More interactions than accounts reached means the two figures came from different posts. The tool says so instead of grading the mistake.

The Formula, And The Four Ways It Gets Misread

Engagement rate = (interactions / followers) * 100. That is the whole calculation, and it is not where accounts go wrong. They go wrong on what goes into it. A rate is only meaningful when every figure comes from the same post, when the definition of an interaction stays fixed across the year, when formats are compared against each other rather than blended into an account average, and when the published median is read as a floor rather than a target. Get those four right and the rate becomes a signal you can act on. Get them wrong and you will spend a quarter chasing a change that was a reporting artifact.

How To Read Your Rate Properly

  1. 1

Take every figure from the same post

Followers today against likes from a post six months ago is a different account. Open the post, tap View insights, and read all of it off one screen.

  2. 2

Decide what counts as an interaction, then never change it

Likes and comments only, or likes plus comments plus saves and shares. Both are defensible. Switching between them mid-year produces a trend line that measures your formula rather than your posts.

  3. 3

Compare formats against each other, not against the account

A carousel and a reel are two different products with two different audiences. Averaging them gives you a number that describes neither and hides the format that is actually working.

  4. 4

Read the median as a floor, not a target

The published median is what an ordinary business account earns. It is the line you should clear, not the line you should aim at, and beating it by a little is not evidence that anything is working.

A Flat Engagement Rate Is Usually An Ideas Problem

Posting more often through the same idea returns the same rate. What moves it is what the post asks a reader to do, and Instagram is unusually direct about which action it counts. Instagram's own ranking explainer lists the most important predictions for reels in order: how likely you are to reshare it, watch it all the way through, like it, and go to the audio page. Reshares come first and likes come third, which is the opposite of how most accounts choose what to make.

That is the work Selzee does. It reads your comments, your reviews and your post results, finds the questions and objections that are actually deciding whether someone shares a post, and turns them into the next set of ideas your team can make this week. If you want the ideas themselves, start with our Instagram post ideas guide, which embeds this same calculator. For the paid side, pair it with the ROAS calculator and the conversion rate calculator.

"Every account can calculate the rate. Almost none can say which post earned it, because nobody goes back and reads the comments on the one that worked."

Who This Is For

Founders, social managers and creators who already have the number in Instagram Insights and need to know what to do about it. We publish no customer names or lift figures on this page, because we will not put numbers here that we cannot yet stand behind.

  • A rate you can compare to the published median, not just to last month.

  • The same rate restated in whole interactions, so a small account can act on it.

  • A flag when the figures you entered did not come from the same post.

Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator: FAQ

01 What is a good Instagram engagement rate? +

Grade against the published median rather than a round number. Rival IQ put the all-industry median Instagram engagement rate by follower at 0.30% in its 2026 benchmark report, down from 0.36% the year before. Below 0.30% you are behind the median, at or above it you are normal, and at 0.60% or better you are running at double it. Smaller accounts sit higher on this measure than large ones, so compare your own trend first and the median second.

02 How do I calculate Instagram engagement rate? +

Add the interactions on a post, divide by your follower count, and multiply by 100. 138 likes, 21 comments and 34 saves on 4,200 followers is 193 interactions, which is 4.60%. Keep the same interaction types in every calculation or your trend line is measuring your formula rather than your posts.

03 Why do published benchmarks disagree with each other? +

Because the formulas differ, not the platform. Rival IQ counts total interactions against followers and reports a 0.30% median. Socialinsider counts likes and comments only and reports a 0.48% average across 70 million posts. Neither is wrong. Pick the definition that matches the benchmark you want to be compared against, then never change it mid-year.

04 Should I measure engagement by followers or by reach? +

Both, for different questions. By followers tells you whether your audience still cares, and it is what public benchmarks are published on. By reach tells you whether a post earned its distribution, and it is what Instagram Insights shows you. A post with a strong reach rate and a weak follower rate travelled well beyond the people who already follow you, which is usually good news.

05 My engagement rate is falling. Is that me or the platform? +

Partly the platform. The published median fell from 0.36% to 0.30% year over year, so a flat rate is a small gain against the field. What is left is yours to move, and the lever is what the post asks a reader to do rather than how often you post.

06 Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere? +

No. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and there is nothing to sign up for to use it.
