What the limits here come from

Meta Ads Guide, Facebook Feed image specs for JPG or PNG, 30 MB at most, 1440 x 1800 pixels recommended and 600 pixels minimum width.

LinkedIn Help, Single image ads advertising specifications for JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB.

Shopify Help Center, Product media types for the file types (PNG first, then JPEG; HEIC accepted), 20 MB and 5000 x 5000 pixels.

ISO/IEC 23008-12, High efficiency image file format for HEIF as an MPEG container standard, first published in 2017.

Apple Support, Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices for the High Efficiency and Most Compatible camera settings.

The examples on this page were made by the same code the tool runs.

The short answer

  • HEIF is the file format; HEIC is a HEIF file with HEVC pictures inside, which is what an iPhone saves. Both end up here as JPG (ISO/IEC 23008-12).
  • Ad managers want JPG or PNG. Meta lists "JPG or PNG" up to 30 MB for a Facebook Feed image ad (Meta's Facebook Feed image ad specs), and LinkedIn takes JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB (LinkedIn's single image ad specs).
  • JPG is the small one. Set the quality: 92 keeps a photo looking like the original, and lower makes the file smaller.
  • JPG has no transparency, so see-through parts turn white. The photo is converted in your browser and never uploaded.

One ad, two JPG qualities

Quality 92: 157 KB.
Quality 60: 66 KB.

JPG quality and file size

Quality File size What you see
100 420 KB The largest file, with no difference you can see from 92.
92 (default) 157 KB Looks like the original. Use it for ads and product photos.
80 98 KB The same look at normal size, and the same file size as the HEIF. Good for email.
60 66 KB Faint blocks in flat areas when you zoom in.
50 57 KB The lowest the slider goes. The blocks show more when you zoom in.

Measured on 5 November 2026 in Chrome: the 870 x 1080 Dust and Glow ad, saved as a 98 KB HEIF on a Mac, converted with the tool above at each quality. Verified 2026-11-05.

HEIF and HEIC: one family

HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, is a container standard written by MPEG and first published by ISO and IEC in 2017 as ISO/IEC 23008-12. It says how to store pictures, not how to compress them.

The compression inside decides the name. A HEIF with HEVC (H.265) pictures is a HEIC: that is the iPhone photo. A HEIF with AV1 pictures is an AVIF.

This converter reads both .heif and .heic files that hold HEVC pictures. It checks the bytes, not the name, so a file with the wrong ending still converts when the inside is right.

An AVIF has its own converter: our AVIF to JPG converter.

To keep a see-through background, or to edit the photo again, convert to PNG with our HEIC to PNG converter instead.

Stop the iPhone making HEIF

To stop your iPhone making HEIF files at all, open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPEG (Apple Support). Photos you already took stay HEIF, so convert those here.

For a batch, select the photos in the Files app or on your computer, drop them all on the converter at once, and download one ZIP.

Once the photos are JPG, our Facebook image resizer cuts each one to a Facebook size.

How to convert HEIF to JPG

  1. Drop the HEIF files

Choose them, drag them onto the box or paste them. One file or a whole shoot. They stay on your device.

  2. Set the JPG quality

The slider starts at 92. Move it down for a smaller file. The size shows next to the Download button.

  3. Download the JPG

One photo downloads as a JPG with the same name. Several come as a ZIP. Then upload them to your ad manager.

HEIF to JPG: FAQ

How do I convert HEIF to JPG?
Drop the HEIF file into the converter above, set the quality if you want a smaller file, and click Download JPG. It works in any current browser on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, with no app and no account. When the JPG is for an ad, Selzee can make the ad from your store URL.
What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC?
HEIF is the file format and HEIC is one kind of HEIF: a HEIF whose pictures are compressed with HEVC. Every iPhone photo in High Efficiency mode is a HEIC, which is a HEIF too (ISO/IEC 23008-12). Making ads with those photos? Try Selzee free.
How do I convert HEIF to JPG on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, tap the box, pick the photos and download the JPGs. For new photos, set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible, and the camera saves JPEG from then on (Apple Support). For ads that are ready to upload, let Selzee make them.
Does Facebook accept HEIF images for ads?
Meta lists JPG or PNG for a Facebook Feed image ad, up to 30 MB, 1440 x 1800 pixels recommended (Meta's Facebook Feed image ad specs). Convert the HEIF to JPG first and upload that. For Facebook ads at the right size, start free with Selzee.
What JPG quality should I use?
Keep 92 for ads and product photos: it looks like the original. Go down to 80 when a file has to be small, such as in an email. At 60 and below, flat areas show faint blocks when you zoom in. The table above shows how the size changes. When you want the finished ad, Selzee makes it from your URL.
Why did the transparent part turn white?
JPG has no transparency, so the converter puts the see-through parts on white instead of black. To keep them see-through, use the HEIC to PNG converter. For ads in your brand colours, paste your URL into Selzee.
Why will my HEIF file not open in Chrome?
No version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox can show a HEIF or HEIC picture; Safari can from version 17 (Can I use). This converter brings its own decoder to the page, so it works in Chrome too. For ads that run anywhere, start free with Selzee, no card needed.

How we checked

Last checked: 5 November 2026. The upload limits come from Meta's Facebook Feed image ad specs, LinkedIn's single image ad specs and the Shopify Help Center; the HEIF facts from ISO/IEC 23008-12 and Apple Support. Each was read at the source that day.

We ran the converter in Chrome, at a laptop width and a phone width, on: a gallery ad saved as HEIF on a Mac, at five qualities; a real iPhone 13 Pro photo; a HEIF with a see-through half; a portrait photo stored on its side; a PNG renamed to .heif; a file cut short; an empty file; and a 50 MB file. Then we opened every JPG it made.

  • The size: every JPG has the same width and height as the photo inside the HEIF.
  • The quality: a lower setting always gives a smaller file; the sizes are in the table above.
  • White, not black: see-through parts come out white.
  • Upright: a photo stored on its side comes out the right way up.
  • Bad files: each one gets a plain message, and the other files in the batch still convert.
  • The download: every JPG opens in Chrome and in Preview on a Mac, and JPG is on Meta's and LinkedIn's lists of file types.
  • The privacy: the converter's code makes no network request with the photo.
