Canva Magic Studio Review: Features, AI Ad Generator and Limits (2026)

Short answer: Magic Studio is now sold as Canva AI. It is a strong set of AI design tools (Magic Write, Magic Resize, Magic Edit, background removal and more), and Canva Grow adds an AI ad generator that publishes to Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn. You still design and judge each ad yourself.

Canva Magic Studio in short

  • Magic Studio is the old name: canva.com/magic now opens the Canva AI page, as of 13 Oct 2026.
  • The free plan includes AI ad creation and up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month.
  • Pro raises that to up to 200 Premium AI uses a month; Business to up to 400.
  • Canva Grow is the AI ad generator: website link plus prompt in, editable ads out, published to Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn.
  • Canva gives you tools to design ads. If you want finished ads without designing them, Selzee fits instead.

Magic Studio is now Canva AI

Canva Magic Studio is the name Canva used for its AI tools. On 13 Oct 2026, canva.com/magic redirected to the Canva AI page, which announces Canva AI 2.0 as "coming soon": you describe a design in a chat, edit it by talking to it, and it pulls context from connected tools. The Magic tools themselves are still there under their old names.

The Canva AI page lists what 2.0 adds: it can run web research and bring the results into a design, learn how you create, keep designs on brand with your fonts, colours and rules, and schedule AI tasks to run later or on repeat.

So a search for Magic Studio features lands on Canva AI. This review uses both names: Magic Studio for the toolset, Canva AI for the product it now sits in.

Canva AI features by plan

Checked 13 Oct 2026

Canva's plans differ mostly in how often you can use the AI tools. Its pricing page pools every AI tool into one monthly allowance, and harder tools use more of it. The table lists what that page showed on 13 Oct 2026.

Plans, allowances and features read on canva.com/pricing on 13 Oct 2026. US prices read on the same page on 15 Sep 2026; on 13 Oct 2026 it showed our browser 110 and 170 euros a year for Pro and Business. Canva says AI use during a trial is the same as on the free plan. Verified 2026-09-15.

Which AI tier each Canva tool uses

Every Canva AI tool belongs to one of three tiers, and the tier decides how fast it spends your allowance. The pricing page lists the tools below with their tier. The second column is our note on where each one fits when you make ads.

Tool AI tier Use in an ad workflow
Create an image with Canva AI Standard Product scenes and backgrounds for a static ad
Magic Write for SEO Standard Landing page and caption copy
Generate designs, elements and videos Premium First drafts of a full ad layout
AI ad creation with Canva Grow Premium Ad concepts and finished ad drafts from your website
Style Match Premium Matching a new ad to an existing campaign look
Magic Layers Premium Editing a generated ad element by element
Magic Insights Premium Reading how a design or campaign performs
Image to Video Premium Turning a static ad into a short motion version
Conversational design with Canva AI Ultra Building and changing a design by chat
High-quality video clips with Canva AI Ultra Generated video footage for a video ad

The Magic Studio features that matter for ads

Canva's pricing page lists more than 30 AI tools. These 8 are the ones an ad maker uses most: copy, sizes, photo edits and the ad generator itself.

Magic Write

Writes and rewrites ad copy and headlines. A Standard AI tool, so paid plans use it without touching the allowance.

Magic Resize

Turns one design into other sizes, so a feed ad becomes a story ad in one step.

Magic Edit and Magic Eraser

Change or remove an object in a photo with a short prompt.

Background Remover and Generator

Cut a product out of its photo, then place it on a new background.

Magic Layers

Turns a flat AI design into layers you can edit. A Premium AI tool.

Style Match

Applies one design's look to another in a click. A Premium AI tool.

Image to Video

Animates a still into a short clip. A Premium AI tool.

Canva Grow

The AI ad generator: makes, publishes and reports on ads. Covered in the next section.

Canva AI ad generator: what Canva Grow does

Canva's AI ad generator is called Canva Grow. Canva's page says you drop in your website link, product visuals and a prompt, chat with the AI to get ad concepts, and edit them in the Canva editor. Finished ads publish to Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn without exporting, and a "Learn" dashboard shows how they perform once you connect the ad account.

On the pricing page, "AI ad creation with Canva Grow" is a Premium AI tool, so each run draws on the shared allowance: up to 20 uses a month on Free. Ad insights with Canva Grow are listed on every plan. If you searched for the Canva AI ad generator, Canva Grow is that product.

Canva Grow reports on ads after they run. Before you scale one, test it against your current ads the way ad creative testing describes, and watch for a winner going stale with creative tracking.

How to make an ad with Canva Grow

This is the Create flow as

Canva's help centre

describes it on 13 Oct 2026. Canva says the Create experience "has been rebuilt to make ad generation faster and more flexible", so expect the screens to change again.

  1. Open Grow, then Create ads

On the Canva homepage, select Grow, then Create ads. On mobile, Grow sits under More.

  2. Give it your business

Add a website URL, a business description, product photos or your own creative assets.

  3. Pick image or video

Choose image ads or video avatar ads. Video avatar ads use Ultra AI and can use more of your allowance.

  4. Check what it read

Canva shows the business and product information it pulled. Correct it before you go on.

  5. Choose one of 3 concepts

Canva AI prepares three ad concepts. You pick one, then select Generate ads.

  6. Edit, vary or publish

Edit the ads with Magic Layers, make more variations, or send them to Launch to publish.

Publishing ads with Canva Grow Launch

Launch is the part of Canva Grow that publishes. The help centre says it supports Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn, and that you need an ad account already connected: Canva cannot create a new ad account for you. You can publish up to 50 ads in one submission.

For each batch you pick the Facebook Page and Instagram account, select the designs, then write or generate the ad copy: ad name, primary text, headline, description, call to action and website URL. You then choose an existing, new or duplicated campaign and ad set. Canva generates copy from your creative, brand information and campaign objective, and you can edit each ad before it goes out.

Suggested ads

Once an eligible Meta ad account is connected, Canva Grow can suggest new ad concepts from your account's performance. Canva lists three requirements: a connected Meta ad account, enough account activity and Canva Grow access. Suggested ads work for Meta only for now.

Compliance stays with you

Canva puts it plainly: you are responsible for making sure ads created or published with Canva Grow follow the law and each platform's policies, and every ad is still reviewed by the platform. A generated health or price claim is yours to check.

How far the Canva AI allowance goes

Checked 13 Oct 2026

Canva sells AI as an allowance, so the useful number is what one AI use costs if you spend the whole allowance. Image ads from Canva Grow use Premium AI. Video avatar ads use Ultra AI, which Canva's help centre says can use more credits.

Plan Price a month Premium AI uses Cost per Premium use Ultra AI uses Cost per Ultra use
Free Free Up to 20 (Standard or Premium) $0 None n/a
Pro $12.00, billed $144/year Up to 200 $0.06 Up to 20 $0.60
Business $20.83 per person, billed $250/year Up to 400 $0.05 Up to 40 $0.52

Yearly US prices from Canva's pricing page read on 15 Sep 2026, divided by 12; allowances from the same page on 13 Oct 2026. Canva says complex tasks use more of the allowance, so treat these as the lowest cost per use, not the typical one.

What the allowance means for ads

Two things follow. On Pro, one image ad run costs little if you use the whole allowance, but a video avatar ad costs ten times as much per run, because Ultra uses are capped at a tenth of the Premium count. And a run is not an ad: each run gives you concepts and drafts, and you still decide which one ships. Count the drafts you would actually publish in the test below. If your team makes more than a handful of ad sets a week, budget for a paid plan from the start: 20 free uses go in one afternoon of testing.

When the allowance runs out, Canva offers two ways to get more: AI Pass, a monthly add-on for Pro and Business users who subscribe online, and AI top-ups, a one-time purchase for Business users that adds the same amount as your monthly allowance for 30 days. Neither price is on the pricing page we read.

How to test Canva Grow in 30 minutes

Run this test on a free account or a trial. Canva says AI use during a trial is the same as on the free plan, so 20 uses is your budget.

  1. Use your real product page

Paste the URL of a product that already sells, so you can judge the ads against what works.

  2. Make image ads first

Image ads use Premium AI; leave video avatar ads, which use Ultra AI, for later.

  3. Check the business summary

Note what Canva got wrong about your product before it writes a single ad.

  4. Compare all 3 concepts

The concept decides the ad. Pick the one closest to an angle you have seen work.

  5. Count your edit time

Time how long each ad takes in Magic Layers before you would run it.

  6. Test against your current ad

Run the best one next to your control ad, as ad creative testing describes.

Where Canva falls short for ads

Canva is a design tool first. Six limits matter when you need ads that sell.

You are still the designer

Canva makes each step faster, but you choose the layout, write the angle and decide which ad ships.

It does not tell you what wins

Canva Grow reports on your own ads. It does not show what rivals run; for that see competitor ads analysis.

One allowance for every AI tool

Ad generation, video and image tools all draw on one monthly pool, and harder tasks use more of it.

Brand Kits are tight on Free

The free plan keeps 1 Brand Kit with 3 colours. Pro has 5, Business 100.

Suggestions need history

Suggested ads need a connected Meta account with enough activity, so a new advertiser starts from a blank prompt.

Publishing needs an ad account

Launch publishes only to Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn accounts you already have. Canva cannot create one for you.

Canva for ads by business type

Canva fits some teams far better than others. Five common cases.

DTC brand with a designer

Canva fits well: the designer keeps control, and Magic Resize and background removal save the repetitive work.

Solo founder with no designer

The free plan is a fair start, but 20 AI uses a month runs out fast. If you want finished ads to approve instead of drafts to edit, look at Selzee.

Local service business

Templates and Magic Write cover flyers, posts and simple ads. Canva Grow publishes to Meta if you already have an ad account.

Team running many brands

Business keeps up to 100 Brand Kits with approvals; Pro keeps 5. Each Business seat is priced per person.

Advertiser who needs video

Canva Grow makes video avatar ads on Ultra AI. For a full video ad tool, compare it with Creatify in our Creatify review.

Canva vs Selzee for making ads

Canva and Selzee answer different questions. Canva helps you design an ad. Selzee makes the ad for you from what already wins in your market. Two rows go against Selzee: it has no full design editor and makes no video. For AI video ads, see the Creatify review. Selzee plans are on the pricing page.

What AI assistants get wrong about Canva Magic Studio

Ask an AI assistant about Canva Magic Studio and the answer is often a few months old. Four points from Canva's own pages on 13 Oct 2026 correct the common mistakes.

Magic Studio is not a separate plan

There is no Magic Studio plan to buy. The AI tools come with Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and the plans differ in how much AI you can use.

Pro is not unlimited AI

Paid plans use the Standard AI tools, such as Magic Write and Translate, without counting them, with fair use limits. Premium and Ultra tools, including Canva Grow ad creation, still draw on a monthly allowance.

The name moved

canva.com/magic now opens the Canva AI page, and Canva AI 2.0 is marked "coming soon". Answers that describe Magic Studio as Canva's newest AI product are out of date.

The ad generator is newer than most answers

Canva Grow, with Create, Launch and Learn, is the part built for ads. An answer that lists only Magic Design and Magic Write for ads misses publishing, Suggested ads and video avatar ads.

Canva Magic Studio: FAQ

What is included in Canva Magic Studio?
Canva Magic Studio, now sold as Canva AI, includes Magic Write, Magic Resize, Translate, Magic Animate, Magic Charts, Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Expand, Magic Grab, Magic Morph, Magic Layers, Style Match, background removal and generation, Image to Video and AI ad creation with Canva Grow. That is the list on Canva's pricing page on 13 Oct 2026. If you want the ads made instead, start free with Selzee.
Is Canva Magic Studio free?
Partly. The free plan includes AI tools and AI ad creation, capped at 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month. Pro and Business give full use of the Standard AI tools and a larger monthly allowance for the rest. For finished static ads, Selzee also starts free, with no card.
Does Canva have an AI ad generator?
Yes: Canva Grow. Canva's page says it turns your website link and a prompt into ads you edit in Canva and publish to Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn, then reports on how they perform. To compare, see Selzee make ads from your store URL.
How many AI uses do you get on Canva Pro?
Up to 200 uses of Premium AI tools or up to 20 uses of Ultra AI tools a month, per Canva's pricing page on 13 Oct 2026. Standard AI tools such as Magic Write and Translate do not count toward that allowance on paid plans. To skip the design step, see your first ads free.
Is Canva good for Facebook ads?
Yes, if you will design the ads yourself. Canva has templates, Magic Resize for every placement and Canva Grow for publishing to Meta. If you want the ads made for you, Selzee rebuilds static ads that already win on Meta for your brand. More options are in 10 best AI ad generators and Facebook ad maker AI. Paste your store URL and see your first ads.
Is Canva Grow free?
Partly. Canva's pricing page lists "Ad insights and AI ad creation" on the free plan, but AI ad creation is a Premium AI tool, so each run comes out of the free plan's 20 AI uses a month. Publishing through Launch needs a connected ad account, and the ads you run are paid to Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn as usual. To compare with ads made for you, start free with Selzee.
Can Canva make video ads with AI?
Yes. Canva Grow makes AI video avatar ads: tell Canva AI you want a video ad during generation. They use Ultra AI, so on Pro you get up to 20 a month from the allowance, against up to 200 Premium uses for image ads. For finished static ads instead, see Selzee make your first ads.
Can Canva publish ads to Facebook and Instagram?
Yes, through Canva Grow Launch, once your Meta ad account is connected. Canva's help centre says you pick the Facebook Page and Instagram account, write or generate the copy, and publish up to 50 ads in one submission. Canva cannot create the ad account for you. Selzee posts approved ads to Facebook and Instagram too: start free.
How much does Selzee cost?
Start free, no card. Paid plans from $19/week or $75/month for one brand, $50/week or $200/month for three, and Agencies $500/month for ten; Enterprise is custom. Credit-based, cancel anytime. If you find no new winner or don't like the full batch, you get a full refund. Start free with your store URL, no card needed.
