Competitor Ad Analysis: How to Read Rival Ads and Turn Them Into Your Next Test
Short answer: competitor ad analysis is reading your rivals' public ads on a fixed codebook (hook, claim, tone, offer, objection), ranking them by how long they have run, and briefing the claim no rival makes that your own reviews back. Pull the ads free from the Meta, TikTok and Google libraries, then run up to six of them through the tagger below.
Key takeaways
- Creative accounts for up to 89% of a digital ad's in-market success, per Nielsen, so the message is the part worth studying.
- Facebook cost per lead rose about 21% year on year in 2025, per WordStream. A test spent on a claim every rival already makes gets dearer every year.
- How long an ad has run is the one free performance signal the libraries give. It is a reason to look closer, not proof the ad is profitable.
- Search the advertiser's Page, not the brand name: our Liquid I.V. search pulled in ads from Target, CVS and VitaWild.
- The output is one brief for one test, not a deck.

Add as preferred sourceWhat competitor ad analysis is (and what it is not)
Competitor ad analysis is the structured practice of decoding the hooks, claims and messaging angles behind rival ads, so you can find the gaps they leave open. Here it means social ad creative: the Facebook, Instagram and TikTok ads a rival brand runs, read for what they say and how long they keep saying it.
It is not the Google Ads keyword-gap report. SpyFu and Semrush show which search keywords a rival bids on and which ones you miss. That is a separate job with its own data, and it never tells you which message a rival's buyers respond to.
The same method holds if you searched competitor ads analysis, competitor ad research or advertising competitive analysis.
How Selzee compares to other competitor ad tools
Competitor ad tools fall into two camps. Ad spy tools and the free libraries show you what rivals run; creative analytics platforms such as Motion measure how your own ads perform. Most tools show you what ads exist. The table shows which kind of tool covers which part of the method below.
| What you need | Selzee | Motion | Ad spy tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| See the ads competitors are running | Yes, reads rivals' ads from the public libraries | Partly | Yes, their core job |
| Creative performance analysis | Partly, reads your own Meta and TikTok ad results in chat once connected, with no reporting dashboard | Yes, its core job | No |
| Cross-reference with your customer reviews | Yes, reads your Trustpilot, Google and app store reviews | No | No |
| Turn signals into a ready-to-ship creative brief | Yes, and makes the ad | No | No |
| Recommend what to test next | Yes, ask it in chat | Partly | No |
| Source the creator (Instagram, TikTok) | Partly, searches public Instagram Reels and TikTok and flags rival ads run through a creator, with no creator database or outreach | No | No |
Each cell is the tool's core, documented use case: Selzee's from its code, Motion's and the spy tools' from their own home pages, checked 30 Oct 2026.

Where to find competitor ads for free
Three free libraries cover most of the ads your rivals run. Open each at the advertiser, not at a keyword: the Competitor Ad Finder on our business ad library guide builds every link from one brand name.
Meta Ad Library
Every active ad on Facebook and Instagram, with the date it started running (Meta). A search returns any ad that contains the term or runs from a Page whose name does, so our Liquid I.V. search pulled in Target, CVS and VitaWild ads.
TikTok Commercial Content Library
Search by advertiser name or keyword, target country and the date an ad was last shown (TikTok). Our Nuun search returned another advertiser's ads first, so check the advertiser on every card. More in our TikTok ads library guide.
Google Ads Transparency Center
Search by advertiser name or website, then filter by date, platform and format (Google). Searching drinklmnt.com returned about 200 ads from several advertiser accounts. More in our Google Ads Transparency Center guide.
What to extract from every competitor ad
Five things carry the messaging logic of an ad, and a sixth is what no ad says. Format and discount are the shallow signals: the easiest to see and the least useful to copy.
Hook
The first line or the first two seconds. Tag its type: question, bold claim, problem callout, review quote, demo, offer or seasonal.
Core claim
The promise. Most fall into results, ingredients, taste, science, social proof, price, convenience or availability.
Emotional tone
Urgent, reassuring, playful, authoritative or aspirational. Repeated tone shows who a rival thinks it is selling to.
Offer
None, a discount, free shipping, subscribe and save, a bundle or a free gift. Note it, then look past it.
Objection handled
The doubt the ad answers before the buyer raises it: price, does it work, taste, trust or effort.
White space
What no rival says. Record it across the whole set, not per ad: it is where your test starts.
How to analyze competitor ads, step by step
-
Gather the ads
Pull the active ads of 3 to 5 rivals from the free libraries. Record each ad's start date, format and placement.
-
Dedupe before you count
One creative often runs as many ads. Somin found 187 Madgicx ads carried only 55 distinct texts.
-
Tag on a fixed codebook
Use the same hook, claim, tone, offer and objection tags on every ad. Loose labels turn the pattern into noise.
-
Rank by days running
Sort by how long each ad has run. An ad live 60 days or more is a reason to look closer, not proof it is profitable.
-
Split table stakes from differentiators
A claim half or more of your rivals make is table stakes. Running it too only adds noise.
-
Find the white space
List the claims nobody makes. There you are not fighting for share of a message buyers already hear.
-
Check it against your own reviews
Keep only the white space your customers already say in reviews. This is the step people skip.
-
Write a one-page brief
The customer, the claim, the hook, the offer and the metric it should move. One brief, one test.
-
Refresh it monthly
Rivals rotate creative all the time, so last quarter's map is already out of date. Rerun it monthly in fast categories.
There is a method to the madness of actually looking through creatives, taking those learnings from your competitor's research, and then turning it into something that you can actually execute.
Tag your rivals' ads
Log up to six rival ads, tick what your own reviews say, and get your ranking, your white space and a one-line brief. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Tick what your own reviews say

What the electrolyte teardown says
No ad in the set has run 60 days. The longest, LMNT's review-quote ad, started on 14 September 2026, 46 days before we captured it. In a category that rotates this fast, compare ads within the set, not against a fixed number.
Results is table stakes: LMNT and Nuun both lead with what the drink does for you, 2 of 3 rivals. Social proof, price, science and availability each belong to one brand. LMNT leans on review quotes and free shipping, with Costco on its newest ads. Liquid I.V. pairs clinically proven hydration with a subscribe-and-save 30% offer. Nuun runs fall hooks and immune support.
The white space is ingredients, taste and convenience. Taste is not fully empty: LMNT's quote cards mention it in a customer's words, but no ad makes it the headline claim. Zero sugar appears in LMNT's and Liquid I.V.'s copy as a detail, never as the main promise.
Say your own reviews keep praising the taste and how easy the sticks are to carry. The tagger's brief: "Lead with taste / experience, open with a review quote hook, free shipping, judge it on CTR against your current best ad." Load the example in the tagger to see the same result.
The closest category we have made an ad for is a powdered drink mix: Ryze mushroom coffee. Selzee opened it with a problem callout, "Worried about jitters?", the one hook type no electrolyte rival in this set uses.
Copy the codebook, brief template and prompt
The tagger's codebook, one line per tag. Paste it into a sheet with one row per ad and one column per field.
| Field | Tags, each with what it means |
|---|---|
| Hook type | question (opens with a question to the viewer), bold claim (states the promise outright), problem callout (names the pain first), review quote (a customer's words open the ad), demo / before-after (shows the product working), offer-led (the deal is the opening), seasonal / news (ties the ad to a season, an event or the news) |
| Core claim | results (what the product does for you), ingredients / quality (what is in it or how it is made), taste / experience (what using it feels like), science / proof (studies, tests or experts), social proof (how many people use or love it), price / value (what it costs or saves), convenience (how easy it is to use or get), availability (where to buy it) |
| Tone | urgent (act now), reassuring (calm, safe, easy), playful (jokes, memes, fun), authoritative (expert, clinical, sure), aspirational (who you could be) |
| Offer | none (no deal in the ad), discount (money or percent off), free shipping (delivery at no cost), subscribe and save (a lower price on repeat orders), bundle (more for less), free gift (something extra with the order) |
| Objection handled | price (is it worth it), does it work (will it do what it says), taste / experience (will I like it), trust (who says so), effort / time (is it a hassle), none (no doubt answered) |
The one-page brief and an honest prompt
A brief is one page and five fields. Fill one per test:
Customer: who the ad is for, in the words your reviews use.
Claim: the white-space claim your reviews back.
Hook: the hook type and its first line.
Offer: the offer, or none.
Metric: the number it should move, against your current best ad.
The free Creative Brief Generator turns real customer language into a fuller brief, and the Hook Generator writes first lines from your product and reviews.
The prompt
To tag pasted ads with a chatbot, give it the codebook and this prompt: "Tag each ad below on this codebook: hook type, core claim, tone, offer and objection handled, using only the options listed. Return one row per ad. Count how many distinct brands use each claim and list the claims no brand uses. Do not invent spend, CTR or ROAS: the ad text does not contain them. If a field is unclear, write unclear."
What competitor ad analysis can't tell you
Competitor ad analysis cannot tell you what an ad spent or earned. Meta shows no spend for any commercial ad. For an ad that never reaches the EU or the UK it shows only the creative, the Page and the date the ad started; reach and targeting appear only on ads delivered there (Meta).
Days running is a hypothesis, not proof. A large brand can leave an ad on for reasons that have nothing to do with results, and a new ad may be the winner nobody has had time to spot.
Counts lie until you dedupe. One creative in five versions is one message, not five.
Copy the angle, never the execution. A rival's words, images and footage are theirs, and buyers who saw the original read yours as the copy. The objection a rival answers is fair game: answer it with your own product's proof.
Look past your direct rivals
Scan only your own niche and you study the same ads as every other brand in it. Add one brand from outside your category that sells to the same buyer: for an electrolyte mix, a running shoe or a protein bar brand.
Prospects tell us the same on sales calls. An ecommerce founder: "Don't search for my competitors, because they might have a lousy content." A former Motion user: "When I'm stealing stuff from competitors it's usually just like other trash."
To see what wins outside your category, browse trending ads across industries.
Competitor ad analysis mistakes
Treating it as a one-time project
Rivals refresh creative every few weeks. A report filed once is stale within a month.
Ignoring customer language
A rival's fast-delivery hook matters only if your buyers care about delivery. Check every finding against your reviews.
Stopping at observation
An analysis that never becomes a brief changes nothing. End every round with one test.
Keeping it fully manual
Pulling, tagging and briefing by hand takes hours, so the work quietly stops. Keep one fixed sheet or use a tool.
Making decks that never ship
Judge the analysis by the tests it starts, not by the slides it fills.
Only looking inside your niche
In-niche scans converge on the same ads. Add one brand from another category that sells to your buyer.
From analysis to a finished ad
Selzee runs the same inputs for you. It scans your site, your ad libraries, your reviews and your competitors, and makes finished ads from that evidence. It can also take a captured rival ad as the layout of a new one, rebuilt around your product and your claim.
Connect Meta Ads, TikTok Ads or Shopify and it reads your own results too, so the next brief starts from what already worked for you. The paid research tools are compared in ad intelligence tools, and the free ones in free spy tools.
