TikTok Spark Ads: how they work, and which posts to boost

What TikTok Spark Ads are, what TikTok's own tests say about them, how authorization codes work, how to set one up in Ads Manager, and how to pick the organic posts worth paying for.

TikTok Spark Ads turn an organic post into an ad. The post keeps its handle, its caption and its comments, and every view, like and follow the ad earns lands on the original post. That is the whole appeal: the ad looks like TikTok because it is a TikTok.

The hard part is not the setup. It takes ten minutes once you have done it twice. The hard part is choosing which posts deserve money, and working with creators so the codes do not expire in the middle of a campaign. This guide covers both, from TikTok's own help pages.

What are TikTok Spark Ads?

Spark Ads are TikTok's native ad format for boosting organic posts. In TikTok's words, Spark Ads "use posts from organic TikTok accounts to ensure that all views, comments, shares, likes, and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to your organic posts" (TikTok Ads help, 2026).

You can boost posts from two places: your own TikTok account, or a creator's account with their permission. The ad shows the post owner's name and caption, so a viewer sees the creator, not a brand banner. TikTok launched Spark Ads globally in July 2021.

What this means for a DTC brand: a good Spark Ad does two jobs. It sells this week, and it leaves a post with real social proof on your profile or your creator's profile after the campaign stops.

Do Spark Ads perform better than regular in-feed ads?

TikTok says yes, in two internal studies. Both are TikTok's own data, so read them as the platform's claim, not as an independent test.

What TikTok measured Spark Ads against standard in-feed ads Source
Completion rate +134% 2022 internal A/B test
6-second view-through rate +157% 2022 internal A/B test
Completion rate +30% Q4 2020 to Q2 2021 internal data
Engagement rate +142% Q4 2020 to Q2 2021 internal data
Conversion rate +43% Q4 2020 to Q2 2021 internal data
CPM -4% Q4 2020 to Q2 2021 internal data

The two completion numbers come from different tests and do not agree: 134% in 2022 and 30% in the earlier data. Many guides quote 134% next to 142% as if they came from one study. They did not.

What this means for a DTC brand: expect Spark Ads to hold attention better than a standard upload, but test that in your own account. We found no independent study that compares the two formats, so your own split test is the only number that counts.

One more figure from the same playbook matters more for planning: 87% of the top 200 high-spending Spark Ads involved creators (TikTok Creative Expert Center, 2023). The format rewards a person on camera. For a library of what creator-led ads open on, see our UGC ad examples.

How do you get a Spark Ads authorization code from a creator?

The creator makes a video code in the TikTok app and sends it to you. You paste it into Ads Manager. Here are the creator's steps, from TikTok's help page (2025):

  1. Allow authorized posts in the profile: Settings and privacy, then Privacy, or Me, then Creator tools.
  2. Open the post and tap the three dots.
  3. Tap Ad settings and agree to the advertising content terms.
  4. Turn on the Ad authorization toggle.
  5. Tap Generate a video code and choose the authorization period.
  6. Tap Copy code and send the code to the brand.
Authorization period When to ask for it
7 days A short test of one post before a bigger deal
30 days One campaign or one sale
60 days The default when a brand partner tag is added in the disclosure flow
365 days An evergreen ad you plan to keep running; the default for requests sent through Content Suite

Sources: creator steps, Content Suite and the disclosure setting, TikTok Ads help, 2025 and 2026.

Agree the period in the creator contract, not in a chat message. A code that ends before the ad does is the most common reason a Spark Ad stops.

For a Duet or a Stitch, you need codes from both creators in the video.

How do you run Spark Ads from your own TikTok account?

Link your account to TikTok Business Center, and you skip codes for your own posts. The account owner scans a QR code to approve the link, with no password shared (TikTok Ads help, 2026).

Turn on two permissions so the account can deliver Spark Ads: Existing posts and Publish and manage new videos. With the second one, you can push a new video to the account from Ads Manager. If you want a video to run only as an ad, the "Only show as ads" setting hides it from organic traffic.

This route suits a brand that films its own content. It also suits an agency that manages a client account, since one Business Center can link up to 800 TikTok accounts.

How do you set up a Spark Ad in TikTok Ads Manager?

Add the post to your creative library first, then pick it when you build the ad. The steps, from TikTok Ads help:

  1. Go to Tools, then Creative library, then Spark ads posts.
  2. Click Apply for authorization, paste the video code, click Search, then Confirm.
  3. Create a campaign with an objective that supports Spark Ads.
  4. In the ad, choose the authorized post as the creative and add your call to action and landing page.

Spark Ads run under the auction objectives Reach, Traffic, Video views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation and Sales, and under Reach and Frequency for Reach, Traffic and Video views.

Four limits to know before launch, all from the Spark Ads creation guide and the Spark Ads help page:

  • You can authorize up to 20 video codes at a time.
  • A private video becomes public once it runs in a campaign, and stays public during the promotion.
  • You cannot edit the caption after the post is authorized. Fix typos before the creator makes the code.
  • An Ads Manager account can hold up to 10,000 Spark Ads.

You can also run Spark and non-Spark ads in the same ad group, which makes a clean head-to-head test.

Which organic posts should you turn into Spark Ads?

Boost posts that already earned attention without money. Paying to push a post nobody watched only buys you a more expensive version of that result.

Use three checks before you ask for a code:

Check What to look for Why
Engagement rate Above the published TikTok figure for the account size Proof the post holds people without help
The first two seconds The point shown on screen, not only said in the voice-over TikTok reports a 6-second view-through rate for Spark Ads because the decision comes early
The product Shown or named, so a buyer knows what to click A great post about nothing is not an ad

For the first check, compare the post to a published figure. Quid's 2026 benchmark report put the median TikTok engagement rate per post at 2.01% by follower. What this means for a DTC brand: a creator post at 4% or more is a strong candidate, and a post under 1% needs a new hook before it gets a budget. Check any post here:

One video's numbers

Open the video, tap the three dots, then Analytics, and copy the figures across.

Leave this empty to match the published benchmarks, which count likes and comments only.

Then look at the hook. If you need new openings for a post that almost worked, the hook generator writes 8 to 10 from your product and your reviews. Our TikTok ads best practices guide covers testing angles and rotating creative once the ads are live.

What goes wrong with Spark Ads, and how do you fix it?

Most problems are authorization problems, and Ads Manager names them. These are the error messages from TikTok's code error page (2025):

Error What it means The fix
not_public_video The post is not public Ask the creator to make it public
auth_code_expired The authorization ended Ask the creator to extend it
calculate_intersection_time_error The authorization ends before the ad's end date Ask for a longer period, or end the ad earlier
video_deleted The post was deleted Pick another post; it cannot be used

Story videos and Duet carousels cannot be sparked at all. A creator also has to un-authorize the post before they can delete it from their account.

Two more risks sit outside Ads Manager:

How Selzee runs the creative work around Spark Ads

Spark Ads boost the posts you already have. The work that decides whether they sell happens before the code and after the launch, and that is the part Selzee does.

Selzee reads what your competitors run in the TikTok and Meta ad libraries, next to what is winning across your market, and recreates those winning ads for your brand. Every ad comes with the angle and the insight it is built on, which gives you and your creators a clear brief for the next post. Connect your TikTok and Meta ad accounts, and Selzee shows you which creative carries the account and which burns budget.

TikTok Spark Ads: FAQ

What is the difference between Spark Ads and regular TikTok ads?

A Spark Ad runs an organic post from a real account, and its views, likes and follows count on that post. A regular in-feed ad is a video uploaded to Ads Manager, and its engagement stays with the ad. Tapping a Spark Ad's profile photo opens the profile, so viewers can follow.

How long does a Spark Ads code last?

The creator chooses 7, 30, 60 or 365 days when making the code. Requests sent through Content Suite default to 365 days, and a brand partner tag in the disclosure flow defaults to 60 days. Agree the period before the campaign dates are set.

Can I use Spark Ads without a creator?

Yes. Link your own TikTok account to Business Center with the Existing posts and Publish and manage new videos permissions, and you can boost your own posts with no codes.

Can I edit a Spark Ad's caption?

No. The caption is locked once the post is authorized. Ask the creator to fix the caption before they generate the code.

How long can a Spark Ads video be?

Up to 10 minutes. TikTok sets no limits on ratio, resolution or file type for Spark Ads. An old TikTok PDF still says one minute; the current help page says 10.

The short version

Spark Ads run organic posts as ads, keep the engagement on the post, and hold attention better than standard uploads in TikTok's own tests. Boost posts that already beat the TikTok median, agree the code period in the contract, and check the music and the disclosure before you pay.
