Instagram highlight covers: the size, the safe circle and the set that earns its place
The size to make an Instagram highlight cover, the arithmetic behind the safe area that guides disagree on, why the tiny display size matters more than the pixels, and the five highlights a business actually needs.
In short
- Make a highlight cover as a 1080 x 1920 story frame. Instagram publishes no separate cover size.
- The profile shows only a circle cut from the middle, at most 1080 pixels across. The top and bottom 420 pixels never show.
- The largest square that fits inside that circle is 764 x 764. Keep the icon inside a centred 720 x 720 and it survives every phone.
- On a profile the circle is tiny, so one icon or one photo subject beats any word written on the cover.
- Highlights are the only part of a profile that stays put. Five that answer a visitor's first questions beat twelve nobody opens.
A new visitor to your profile sees your highlights before they see a single post. The row of circles under your bio is the only part of an Instagram profile that does not scroll away or expire, which makes it the closest thing Instagram has to a menu. Most accounts fill it with cut-off screenshots and words too small to read.
This piece gives you the size to make a cover at, the arithmetic behind the safe area that guides keep disagreeing on, why the display size matters more than any pixel figure, and the five highlights a business actually needs.
What size is an Instagram highlight cover?
Make it 1080 x 1920 pixels, a 9:16 frame. A highlight cover is picked from a story or uploaded like one, and 1080 x 1920 is the size Meta gives for a story (Meta Business Help Center). Instagram does not publish a separate size for highlight covers, so a guide that quotes an "official" cover size is quoting the story size.
The profile then shows only a circle cut from the middle of that frame. The arithmetic is short:
| Figure | Where it comes from | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080 x 1920 | The story frame | The only file size you need |
| 1080 x 1080 | The middle square, the widest the circle can reach | Everything outside it is never shown |
| 420 pixels | Lost at the top and at the bottom: (1920 minus 1080) divided by 2 | Keep nothing there |
| 764 x 764 | The largest square inside a 1080 circle: 1080 divided by the square root of 2 | The hard edge for the corners of an icon |
| 720 x 720 | A centred square with a margin all round | Where to design |
What this means for a brand: design in the middle 720 x 720 and treat the rest of the frame as bleed. The Instagram story size checker confirms the 9:16 frame before you upload it, the Instagram post size guide covers every other shape on the platform, and the social media image size checker covers every other network.
Why do the guides give different safe areas?
Because they choose different margins, not because the rule differs. A guide that says 600 x 600 keeps a wide margin; one that says 720 x 720 keeps a small one; one that says 1080 x 1080 keeps none and lets the circle cut the corners. The only fixed number is the circle itself. Anything inside 764 x 764 has its corners inside the circle; anything inside 720 x 720 has some room to spare.

On a photo cover, this means the subject has to sit dead centre. The circle covers about 44% of the frame's area, so a photo framed for a story usually loses its subject's head or feet.
Why does the display size matter more than the pixels?
Because the circle is small. On a profile, a highlight cover shows at roughly the width of a fingertip, next to four others. At that size a single bold shape reads and a word does not: anything more than a few letters turns into a grey line.
That one fact settles most design questions. No text on the cover, since the highlight's name already sits under it. One subject or one icon per cover. High contrast between the icon and its background. The same logic applies to your profile picture, which the free Instagram profile picture size checker shows at its real round crop.
What is the highlights row actually for?
Navigation. Stories disappear after 24 hours unless you add them to a highlight (Instagram Help Center), and posts sink down the grid. The highlights row is the one thing a visitor sees in the same place every time, which makes it the menu of your profile.
That changes what goes in it. A highlight is not an archive of every story you liked; it is an answer to a question a first-time visitor has. The Instagram story ideas guide covers which stories are worth keeping once they have run.
Which highlights earn their place?
Five, each with one job:
- Menu, Services or Prices: what you sell and what it costs.
- Hours and Find us: when you are open and how to get there.
- Reviews, Results or Before and after: other customers, in their own words.
- FAQ: the questions you answer in DMs every week.
- Book, Order or Start here: the one step you want a new visitor to take.
Name each with one short word. A long name is cut off under the circle, so "Menu" beats "Our Full Menu". Reviews in particular do more work than their size suggests; the social proof guide covers why other people's words sell better than yours.

Photo covers or icon covers?
Either works. Mixing them does not. A row reads as one set when every cover shares one idea: all photos with a single subject, or all icons in one colour on one background.
For photo covers, pick one subject with room around it and crop it into the centre: a latte from above, a single pastry, one tool of the trade. For icon covers, use one simple icon per cover on a plain background in your brand colour (the same colours your brand voice and posts already use), and export the file as a PNG so the edges stay sharp. Keep either inside the middle 720 x 720.

What breaks a highlight row?
Three mistakes cover almost every messy profile.
- Text on the cover. It is cut by the circle and too small to read. The highlight's name is the text.
- A cover designed on the whole frame. Anything in the top or bottom 420 pixels is gone. Design for the middle.
- A stale set. A "Summer menu" highlight in November tells a visitor nobody looks after the profile. Review the row whenever your offer changes, as you would the posts you plan.

How do I change a highlight cover without posting a story?
- Open your profile and press and hold the highlight.
- Tap Edit highlight, then Edit cover.
- Pick a frame from the highlight's stories, or tap the gallery icon to upload an image from your phone.
- Move and zoom the image inside the circle, then tap Done.
Nothing is posted to your story. To start a new highlight, tap the + under your bio, choose the stories that belong in it, name it and set the cover the same way. Instagram's own steps are in the Instagram Help Center. If the cover image is the wrong shape, the Instagram image resizer makes a 9:16 file from any photo.
How Selzee keeps a profile worth opening
Highlights are only worth tapping when the stories inside them are. Selzee researches your brand, your reviews and the posts working in your market right now, and recreates the winning ones for your brand, in your colours and with your products, with new ones every day. Approve the ones you like and post or schedule them to Instagram in one click, then keep the best of them in your highlights. The Instagram captions guide covers the words that go under each post.
Instagram highlight covers: FAQ
What size is an Instagram highlight cover?
1080 x 1920 pixels, the size of a story. The profile shows a circle cut from the middle, so keep the icon inside a centred 720 x 720.
What is the safe area for a highlight cover?
A centred 720 x 720. The circle is at most 1080 pixels across, the largest square inside it is 764 x 764, and 720 x 720 leaves a small margin inside that.
Why do guides give different safe area sizes?
They pick different margins. The circle is fixed; 600, 720 and 764 are simply more or less room inside it.
Should highlight covers have text on them?
Rarely. The circle is small and cuts the edges, so words become hard to read. Use an icon or a photo, and let the highlight's name carry the word.
How many highlights should a business have?
Around five, each answering one question a new visitor has: what you sell, when and where, what customers say, the common questions, and how to buy or book.
Do I need to post a story to change a highlight cover?
No. Press and hold the highlight, tap Edit highlight, then Edit cover, and upload an image from your phone.
The short version
Export at 1080 x 1920, design inside the middle 720 x 720, and use one subject or one icon per cover with no text. Name each highlight with one word, keep the row in one style, and keep five that answer a visitor's first questions.
