Video ideas: 30 for YouTube, TikTok and Reels, sorted by type
30 video ideas for YouTube, TikTok, Reels and Shorts, sorted by type: long videos, short videos, product and brand videos, and ideas for people who do not want to show their face.
Short answer: good video ideas come in four types. Long videos teach or test something (YouTube). Short videos open with a payoff in the first seconds (TikTok, Reels, Shorts). Product videos show the thing in use. Faceless videos let the hands, the screen or the product carry it. Below are 30 ideas, sorted by those four types, with the length each platform takes.
A list of video ideas is only useful if you can tell which one to film first. So every idea here has the same three parts: the idea, the first line or first shot, and what the viewer should get by the end. The pictures are static ads Selzee made in formats that also work as a video: a meme, a comic, a three-step process.
What makes a video idea worth filming?
A video idea is worth filming when you can say the first line out loud and the viewer knows in that moment what they will get. TikTok's own guide asks for the content proposition in the first 3 seconds and the hook in the first 6, shot vertical at 9:16 (TikTok Ads creative best practices, 2026). If the idea needs a minute of setup, it is a long video, not a short one.
The platform decides the length. YouTube treats a vertical or square upload of up to 3 minutes as a Short, for videos uploaded since October 15, 2024 (YouTube Help, 2024).
| Platform | Shape | Length that fits | What the viewer came for |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 16:9 | 8 to 20 minutes for most how-to and review videos | To learn something or decide on a purchase |
| YouTube Shorts | 9:16 or square | Up to 3 minutes | A quick payoff while scrolling |
| TikTok | 9:16 | 15 to 60 seconds for most ideas | Entertainment, then information |
| Instagram Reels | 9:16 | 15 to 90 seconds | Something to send to a friend |
The YouTube, TikTok and Reels lengths are our own starting points, not platform rules. Test shorter first.
What this means for a small brand: start where your buyers already are. YouTube reaches 84% of US adults and TikTok 37% (Pew Research Center, 2025). YouTube reaches more than twice as many adults, so do not drop it only because TikTok is the newer channel.

Good YouTube video ideas answer something people type into search: how to do a thing, which product to buy, whether something works. A long video earns its length by giving a full answer.
- The full tutorial. One task, start to finish, with nothing skipped. First line: "By the end of this you will have done it once."
- The 30-day test. Use a product or a method for 30 days and report what changed, with numbers.
- The honest comparison. Two options side by side on the same tests, with a winner for each type of buyer.
- The buyer's guide. "What to look for before you buy a ..." Five checks, then your picks.
- The process, from raw to finished. Show how your product is made in three stages, like the input, recover and result steps in the cover.
- The myth, tested. Take one belief in your field and test it on camera.
- Behind the scenes of one order. From the order notification to the parcel leaving, filmed in one day.
- The questions, answered. Collect 10 questions from comments and answer each in under a minute, with chapters.
Blendtec's Will It Blend? series runs idea 6 as a whole show: the company's founder puts one object in the blender per episode, here an iPhone, and the result is the verdict.
A long video is also raw material. One 12-minute tutorial holds three or four Shorts, which is the reason to film the long one first.
What are good short video ideas for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?
Short video ideas show the payoff first and explain after. Shorts alone now average 200 billion views a day, per YouTube CEO Neal Mohan's 2026 letter, so every short competes with billions of others. The same list holds if you searched TikTok video ideas: every idea here is cut for 9:16 and works on all three platforms.
- "This is Alex." A two-panel skit: the person who does it the hard way, then the person who found the fix. The comic in the cover is this idea as a still.
- The storytime from a thread. Read a real post from a forum in your niche and react to it, like the Reddit-style ad below.
- The one-shot before and after. One continuous clip, no cut, so nobody thinks you edited it.
- The meme with your product in the punch line. "The future is coming. But." Use a format your audience already sends to friends.
- The point of view. "POV: you just opened the box." Film it from the viewer's eyes.
- The one thing I would never buy. A product in your category you avoid, and why.
- The reply with a video. Show a comment on screen and answer it.
- Three ways to use one product. Three cuts, five seconds each.
- The sports moment. If your product touches a game, a match or a race, post on the day it happens.
- The countdown. "Five things to check before ..." Number on screen, one shot each.
Liquid Death's Big Game spot is idea 12 with a TV budget: people drink what looks like beer in jobs where that would be a disaster, and the can in the last shot is the punch line.

What video ideas work for a brand or product?
A brand video works when it shows the product doing its job, in a real place, in the first shot. Talk about the brand later or never.
- The screen demo. For an app or a store, record the screen while you do one task, like the store demo below.
- The try-on. One piece, three ways to wear it. Fashion and jewelry live on this idea.
- The unboxing by a customer. Ask for permission and repost it with credit.
- The goal. Open with what the buyer wants in their own words, then show the product getting them there.
- The customer question, answered. Pick the question that comes up in every sale and answer it in 30 seconds.
- The founder's reason. Why the product exists, in one take, with no script on screen.
Dollar Shave Club's launch video is idea 24: the founder, Michael Dubin, says why the company exists, talking straight to camera as he walks through his own warehouse.
Squatty Potty's unicorn ad is idea 22 with a joke on top: it opens on the problem the buyer has, then shows the product fixing it.
What video ideas work if you do not want to show your face?
You can run a whole channel without your face on camera. The product, your hands, a screen or a drawing can carry the video.
- Hands only. Film the work from above: packing, mixing, fixing, sketching.
- Product close-ups. Slow shots of the details, with the light moving, like the bracelet below.
- Voice-over on photos. Your best photos in order, with your voice explaining each one.
- Text on screen. A story told in five lines of text over one shot. TikTok's guide suggests 5 to 10 words per second when you use text.
- A drawn or pixel-art story. Four panels, one problem and its fix, like the pixel story in the cover.
- The time-lapse. A whole day of work in 20 seconds.
Purple's raw egg test carries most of its demo without a face: text on screen and eggs on the mattress do the explaining, which is ideas 26 and 28 in one video.
How do you turn one video idea into a week of posts?
Film one long video and cut the rest from it. This is how a small team keeps a daily schedule without filming every day.
| Day | Post | Cut from the long video |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | The full YouTube video | The original, with chapters |
| Tuesday | Short 1 | The strongest 40 seconds, reframed to 9:16 |
| Wednesday | Reel | The before and after |
| Thursday | Short 2 | The one tip people will save |
| Friday | Carousel | Five frames from the video, with a line each |
| Saturday | Story with a poll | "Which one would you pick?" |
| Sunday | TikTok | The funniest mistake from the shoot |
Every 9:16 cut also needs its text clear of the on-screen buttons. Drop a frame of your short in to see what TikTok's tabs, buttons and caption cover:

How Selzee fits next to your video plan
Selzee does not make video. Selzee is an AI ad generator that makes finished static image ads: it finds the ads trending for other brands right now and recreates them for yours, with your products, logo, colors and fonts. Approved ads ship to Meta Ads, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok in 1 click. If you plan paid video, our guide to a video content strategy for paid social covers the testing loop.
Video ideas: FAQ
What are some good video ideas for beginners?
Start with a full tutorial of one thing you know, a before and after in one shot, and the answer to the question people ask you most. All three need one camera, no editing skill and no script. Turn your best video message into ads with Selzee.
What should my first YouTube video be?
Make a tutorial or a buyer's guide that answers a search people already make in your field. A how-to video keeps getting found for months, while a trend video fades in a week. Add chapters so viewers can jump to their part. Get static ads for your channel's launch with Selzee.
What are easy TikTok video ideas?
The reply with a video, three ways to use one product, a point-of-view shot and a meme with your product in the punch line are the easiest. Each one needs a phone and under an hour. TikTok asks for the hook in the first 6 seconds. Get ads from your best TikTok idea with Selzee.
How long should a short video be?
Most short videos work at 15 to 60 seconds, and YouTube Shorts can run up to 3 minutes. Make the first 3 seconds say what the viewer will get, then stop as soon as you have delivered it. Make static ads in every placement size with Selzee.
How can I make videos without showing my face?
Film your hands, the product in close-up, your screen or a drawn story, and add your voice or text on screen. Many channels run like this for years. TikTok suggests 5 to 10 words per second when you use text. Get ads for a faceless brand with Selzee.
