Types of advertising: 12 types and when a brand should run each

The 12 types of advertising, from social and search to out of home and creator ads, with 2025 spend figures from IAB and OAAA, and a plain guide to which type a small brand should run first.

Short answer: there are 12 main types of advertising. Seven are bought online (social, search, display, native, online video, commerce media and creator ads) and five run offline or on a screen you do not scroll (TV and connected TV, audio, out of home, print and direct mail). In the US, social ads took $117.7 billion in 2025, the most of any digital type (IAB and PwC, April 2026).

This guide gives each type two extra facts for someone with a budget: what you actually pay for, and the moment a small or DTC brand should switch it on. The pictures are static ads Selzee made, one per type where a static ad fits.

What are the main types of advertising?

The 12 types differ in where the ad runs and in what you pay for. What you pay for decides more than where the ad runs: a type you pay for per click behaves very differently from one you pay for per thousand views.

Type Where it runs You pay for Best for Fails when
Social media Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn Views (CPM) or results Finding new buyers for a product people do not search for yet The creative looks like an ad in the first second
Search Google, Bing, Amazon search Clicks (CPC) Catching people who already type what you sell Nobody searches for your category
Display Banners on websites and apps Views Reminding past visitors It goes to cold audiences with no frequency cap
Native Inside feeds and articles, styled like the content Views or clicks Reading-heavy offers, like a guide or a story The disclosure is hidden
Online video YouTube, Reels, TikTok in-feed Views Showing a product in use The first 3 seconds say nothing
TV and connected TV Broadcast, streaming apps on TV sets Views Reach in one region at one time You need clicks to judge it
Audio Radio, podcasts, music streaming Listens or spots A spoken offer with a short code The offer needs a picture
Out of home Billboards, bus shelters, transit, screens Time on display Local brands and launches in one city The message is longer than 7 words
Print Newspapers, magazines Space Niche readers who trust the title You cannot track the response
Direct mail Letters, catalogs, inserts Pieces sent Past buyers, high order values The list is cold
Commerce media Amazon, Walmart, retailer sites Clicks or views Products sold on that retailer You do not sell there
Creator and influencer Creators' own posts and videos A fee per post or a commission Trust in a new brand The creator's audience is not your buyer

What this means for a small brand: the 12 types are a menu, and nobody orders everything. Start with the one or two that match how your buyer finds products like yours, then add a type only when the first one stops scaling.

How much money goes into each type of advertising?

Spend shows where buyers are, so it is a fair first filter. In 2025, US digital advertising reached $294.6 billion, up 13.9% on 2024 (IAB and PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report, April 2026). The same report splits it like this:

Type (IAB category) 2025 US revenue Growth vs 2024
Social $117.7 billion +32.6%
Search $114.2 billion +11%
Display $81.6 billion +9.8%
Digital video (incl. CTV and social video) $78 billion +25.4%
Commerce media $63.4 billion +18%
Creator advertising $37 billion not given
Podcast $2.9 billion +17.6%

The categories overlap, so they add up to more than the total: a Reels ad counts as social and as video. Offline, US out-of-home revenue reached a record $9.46 billion in 2025, up 3.6%, and 36.3% of it was digital screens (OAAA, March 2026).

What this means for a DTC brand: social grew almost three times as fast as search last year. That is where the auction is moving, and it is also where the creative wears out fastest.

Which digital types of advertising should a DTC brand start with?

Start with social ads if people do not search for your product yet, and with search ads if they do. Most new DTC products are in the first group: nobody types "copper jacket" until they have seen one. Retargeting with display or native ads comes third, once enough people visit the site to retarget.

Social media ads

A social ad sits in the feed between posts from friends, and it has to win attention against them. The ad above uses a meme layout ("but") that people already know from their own feeds. The platform finds the buyer; your job is the picture and the first line. US adults use YouTube (84%), Facebook (71%), Instagram (50%) and TikTok (37%), per Pew Research Center (2025). For a product people discover rather than search for, this is where most brands find their first buyers. We cover the mechanics in what paid social is.

Search ads

A search ad answers a question someone just typed. You pay per click, so a search ad that nobody clicks costs nothing. The limit is volume: search can only sell to people who already know what to look for.

Display and native ads

Display ads are banners on other sites. Native ads look like the content around them, like the Reddit-style thread below. Both work best on people who already visited you. The US Federal Trade Commission requires a native ad to be clearly labeled as an ad (FTC, Native Advertising: A Guide for Businesses), so a native format that hides the label is a legal risk as well as a trust one.

When do offline types of advertising make sense?

Offline types make sense when your buyers live in one area, or when you need many people to see one message at the same time, like a launch or an opening. They are hard to measure by clicks, so judge them by what changes in the weeks they run: branded searches, store visits, direct traffic.

Out of home

Billboards, bus shelters and transit ads are the oldest type on the list, and they still grew in 2025. Transit was the fastest-growing segment for the second year in a row, up 9.2%, per the same OAAA release. A bus shelter gives a reader a few seconds, so the ad below says one thing in big letters.

TV and connected TV

Connected TV is TV ads bought through streaming apps, with digital targeting. It is in the IAB video figure above. For a small brand it is usually a step after social works, because it sells reach, and reach is expensive to buy before you know which message sells.

Audio, print and direct mail

Audio is a spoken ad in a podcast, on the radio or between songs. It needs an offer you can say and remember, such as a short discount code. Print and direct mail work best on a known list: past buyers get a catalog, a niche magazine reaches a niche reader. A cold mailing to strangers is the costly version of a cold social ad.

What types of ads work inside each channel?

The type of ad is a second choice, made after the channel. The same list holds if you searched for types of ads. A type of ad is the creative idea the picture is built on. One channel can carry all of them, and most accounts test several at once.

Type of ad The idea Best channel fit Example below
Creator or UGC style A real person shows it, in their own words Social, video Quinn Marketing
Offer A price, a gift or a deal on the picture Social, search, retargeting Element Vital
Brand One feeling, almost no words Out of home, print, video PDPAOLA
Social proof A customer's words or a rating Retargeting, social Selzee
Comparison Your product beside the old way Social, search Ridge (in the cover)

A brand ad and an offer ad are two ends of one line: brand ads build the memory that makes the offer work later. Our guide to direct response advertising covers the offer end in depth, and static ads covers the format most of these examples use.

How do you choose the right type of advertising for your budget?

Pick the type by your stage. A brand with its first 100 customers needs a type that finds buyers and shows results in days. A brand with steady sales can buy reach it cannot measure by clicks.

Your stage Start with Add next Leave for later
First sales, small budget Social ads with 3 to 5 creatives Search on your brand name TV, out of home
Steady sales online Social plus retargeting Search on category terms, creators Print
Local business Search, social in a small radius Out of home near the shop, direct mail National TV
Sold on Amazon or a retailer Commerce media on that retailer Social to the product page Display to cold audiences

To compare types on cost, put each one in the same unit. Most offline and social buys are priced per thousand views (CPM), so work out the CPM of any offer before you compare it with what you pay on Meta. Fill in any two of spend, impressions and CPM:

What this means for a small brand: a billboard quote and a Meta campaign look impossible to compare until both are a CPM. Then the question is only which audience is worth more to you.

How Selzee makes ads for each type

Selzee is an AI ad generator. It finds ads that are trending and working for other brands right now, and recreates them for yours with your products, logo, colors and fonts. It makes finished static image ads with copy, in the sizes for feed, story and square placements, and ships approved ads to Meta Ads, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok in 1 click. That covers the social type, and a static file also works for display, native, out of home and print. Selzee does not make video, audio or TV ads, and it does not buy media or set budgets. Every ad picture on this page carries a "Try on my brand" button: pick the bus shelter or the comparison, and Selzee makes that format for your brand.

Types of advertising: FAQ

What are the 4 main types of advertising?

A short list of four usually means digital, broadcast (TV and radio), print and out of home. Digital now holds most of the money: $294.6 billion in the US in 2025, per IAB and PwC. Inside digital, social and search are the two biggest types. Make social ads for your brand with Selzee.

What is the most effective type of advertising?

No type wins for every brand. The most effective type is the one where your buyer already spends time and makes decisions: search for products people look for, social for products people discover. Test two types with the same offer and compare the cost per order. Get ads to test on social with Selzee.

What type of advertising is best for a small business?

For most small businesses, social ads and search ads are the place to start, because both work with a small budget and show results within days. A local business should keep its social ads to a small radius and bid on local Google search terms. Start with ready-made social ads from Selzee.

What is the difference between types of advertising and types of ads?

Types of advertising are channels: where the ad runs, like social, search or out of home. Types of ads are creative ideas: what the ad says, like an offer, a comparison or a customer quote. One channel can carry every type of ad. See which types of ads Selzee can make for you.

Is social media advertising worth it for a new brand?

Usually yes, if you can make enough creatives to test. Social ad revenue grew 32.6% in the US in 2025, because brands keep finding buyers there. The cost is creative: a winning ad wears out, so you need new ones often. Get new social ads every day with Selzee.
