Social media post ideas: 40 sorted by the result you want
Forty post ideas for TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, sorted by what each one is built to earn: reach, comments, trust or sales. Plus what each platform says it ranks, and how to tell which ideas worked.
Most lists of social media post ideas treat every platform as the same feed. They are not. TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram each publish what their ranking systems look for, and the four answers differ. A behind-the-scenes clip that travels on TikTok can sink on LinkedIn, and a long text post that starts a real debate on LinkedIn gets scrolled past on Instagram.
So this list starts from the result you want, not from the platform. Pick the goal first: reach, conversation, trust or sales. Then pick an idea built for that goal, and put it on the platform that rewards it. Each idea below names where it works best.
Why does one post idea work on one platform and flop on another?
Each platform rewards a different action, and it says so in its own words. An idea is only good if it earns the action the platform is counting.
| Platform | What it says it looks for | What that means for your idea |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Likes, shares, comments, follows, and whether you finish a longer video. A finished long video weighs more than a weak signal (TikTok, 2020) | The first two seconds decide the rest. Ideas need a question that the end of the video answers |
| For reels, how likely you are to reshare, watch to the end, like, and open the audio page, in that order (Instagram, 2023) | Build for the send. A post people forward beats a post people like | |
| A relevance score for about 500 candidate posts, using signals such as time spent, the number of comments and the average length of comments (Meta, updated 2026) | Long comments count. Ask questions people want to answer in full sentences | |
| Fewer low-substance posts and less engagement bait, such as "comment to agree" prompts, and more posts that offer genuine insight and actionable ideas (LinkedIn, 2026) | Teach one thing from real work. Bait now costs you reach |
What this means for a small brand: you do not need four content plans. You need one idea, shaped four ways. The same customer story can be a 20-second TikTok, a LinkedIn post about the lesson, a Facebook question, and an Instagram carousel.

Add as preferred sourceWhich social media post ideas get the most reach?
Reach ideas earn a watch to the end or a share. They work best on TikTok and Instagram Reels, where the feed shows posts to people who do not follow you yet.
Ideas that hold a viewer to the end (TikTok, Reels)
- The myth in your field, busted in one take. Say the myth in the first line, then show why it is wrong.
- A before and after with the real numbers on screen. Not "we improved it", but what changed and by how much.
- "I tried X for 30 days." A clear promise in the hook, and the result held to the last five seconds.
- The mistake that cost you money. Name the amount. Specific losses travel further than general advice.
- A process sped up. A product made, packed or fixed from start to finish in 15 seconds.
- Ranked: three tools, products or methods in your niche. Saying which one is worst is what earns the comments.
- The question you get asked most, answered in under 30 seconds. Put the question on screen as text.
- A reaction to a common bad tip. Stitch or quote the claim, then correct it.
Ideas people send to a friend (Instagram, TikTok)
- "Send this to the friend who..." content, but only when the post really settles something.
- A cheat sheet someone screenshots. Five lines at most.
- The thing everyone in your niche notices and nobody says. Relatable posts get forwarded.
- A price or cost breakdown. People share money facts with the person who will pay.

A note on trends: in the Sprout Social Index 2025, 33% of 4,044 consumers said brands jumping on viral trends is embarrassing, and about half said original content is what makes their favourite brands stand out. What this means for a small brand: a trend sound is fine, but the idea under it has to be yours.
Which post ideas start real conversations?
Conversation ideas earn comments, and the best of them earn long ones. They work best on LinkedIn and Facebook, where comments carry a lot of weight in the feed.
Ideas for LinkedIn
- A lesson from one real project, with the numbers. What you did, what happened, what you would change.
- A document post that teaches one process in five slides. On LinkedIn, native documents earned a 7.00% engagement rate by impressions in 2025, the highest of any format (Socialinsider, 2026).
- A strong opinion about your industry, with your reason. One claim per post, so people can agree or argue with it.
- A multi-image post of a project from start to end. Multi-image posts came second at 6.45%.
- "What I would do with a 1,000-dollar budget." Concrete constraints get detailed replies.
- A hiring, firing or pricing decision, and why you made it. Real decisions beat generic tips.
- The tool stack you actually use, and the one you dropped.
- A post that credits a customer or a colleague by name for a specific result, with their permission.

The Socialinsider data also shows what does badly on LinkedIn: link posts came last at 3.25%. What this means for a B2B brand: keep the value in the post, and put the link in a comment or leave it out.
| LinkedIn format | Engagement rate by impressions, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Native document | 7.00% |
| Multi-image | 6.45% |
| Video | 6.00% |
| Image | 5.30% |
| Text | 4.50% |
| Poll | 4.20% |
| Link | 3.25% |

Ideas for Facebook
- A question your local audience has an opinion on. "Which pastry should we bring back for winter?"
- This or that, with two photos. Easy to answer, so more people do.
- A status post with no link. In the Socialinsider Facebook data, status posts led 2025 at 0.20% and link posts sat at 0.05%.
- An album of one event or one day in the shop. Albums earned 0.18%.
- "Tell us your story" posts about the first time a customer used your product.
- A behind-the-counter reel. Reels also earned 0.18% in 2025 and led Facebook formats in Q2 2026.

Which ideas build the trust that turns into sales?
Trust ideas earn saves, profile visits and the slow kind of loyalty that turns into a purchase later. They work on every platform. The format changes, not the idea.
Ideas that earn trust
- Your process, shown honestly. How you source, make or check the product.
- The customer review that changed your product, and what you changed.
- A step-by-step tutorial someone saves for later. On Instagram, carousels had the highest engagement rate of any format in 2025, at 0.55% (Socialinsider, 2026). We covered how to build a carousel that gets saved separately.
- The team behind the brand, one person and one job per post.
- What your product is not for. Saying who should not buy it makes the rest believable.
- An event recap with one thing you learned, written for LinkedIn and filmed for Reels.

Ideas that sell plainly
- One product, one problem it solves, one price. No lifestyle wrapping.
- A demo in one take with no music.
- A customer quote in their own words over a photo of the product in use.
- A comparison you would make as the buyer, including where a competitor is better.
- An offer with a real reason to end, such as a batch that is selling out.
- The FAQ post: the three questions people ask before they buy, answered.
- Unboxing from your own packing table.
- A "what you get" flat lay with every item named.

How do I turn one idea into posts for four platforms?
Write the idea once, as one sentence. Then change the container, the length and the ask for each platform. The idea stays the same.
| Platform | Container | Length limit | The ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Vertical video, 15 to 45 seconds | 2,200 characters through TikTok's posting API; put the hook on screen too | Watch to the end |
| Reel or carousel | 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags | Send it or save it | |
| Status, album or reel | Long posts fold after a few lines, so put the question first | Answer the question | |
| Document, multi-image or text | 3,000 characters | Add your experience |
Example: idea 4, "the mistake that cost you money". On TikTok it is a 30-second clip that opens on the amount. On LinkedIn it is a text post about the decision behind the mistake. On Facebook it is a question: "What is the most expensive mistake you made in your first year?" On Instagram it is a carousel of the three warning signs you missed.

How do I know which post ideas worked?
Compare each post to a published figure for its platform, not to your best post and not to a feeling. The medians are low, and they differ a lot by platform.
Quid's 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report, formerly Rival IQ, put the median engagement rate per post by follower at 2.01% on TikTok and 0.30% on Instagram, down from 0.36%. It counted total interactions over followers, for 150 companies in each of 18 industries. What this means for a small account: a 1% engagement rate is weak on TikTok and strong on Instagram. Never compare the two with one target.
| Platform | Published figure | Who, year | How it is counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2.01% median | Quid, 2026 | Interactions over followers |
| 0.30% median | Quid, 2026 | Interactions over followers | |
| 5.20% average | Socialinsider, 2026 | Engagement over impressions | |
| 0.13% average, Q2 2026 | Socialinsider, 2026 | Engagement over fans |
The formulas differ, so read each number only against its own platform. Here is a calculator that grades a post against the published figure for its own network:

How Selzee turns what already works into your next posts
Selzee is your AI content team. It researches your market, your customers and your competitors across your site, your reviews, Reddit and social media, and it reads what your competitors run in the Meta, TikTok, Google and Pinterest ad libraries.

From that research, Selzee recreates, for your brand, the ads and posts that are winning right now, with your products, logo, fonts and colours. Every one comes with the angle and the insight it is built on, so you can see which goal it serves. You edit a headline or a product shot by asking, approve the ones you like, and ship them to ad platforms and social media in one click. Every day it learns from the ones you did not approve.
It does not invent an audience insight you never had. It starts from what your market already responds to, which is the same filter this list uses.
Social media post ideas: FAQ
What should I post on social media when I have no ideas?
Pick one goal for the week, then pick two ideas for it from the list above. Answer the question customers ask you most, show one part of your process, and post one plain offer. The content idea generator gives you six more in a minute.
How often should a small business post?
Often enough to keep a steady rhythm you can hold. Quid's 2026 report found brands posting a median of 3.69 times a week on Instagram, 3.0 on Facebook and 1.98 on TikTok. Start at three posts a week on your main platform and add one only when you can keep the quality.
Can I post the same content on every platform?
Post the same idea, not the same file. Each platform rewards a different action, so change the container, the length and the ask. A carousel on Instagram can be a document post on LinkedIn and a question on Facebook.
Which social media post ideas work best for a local business?
Questions with local opinions, behind-the-counter clips, the team, and a customer story. Facebook rewards long comments, so ask questions people answer in full sentences. Tag your location only when the post was really made there.
Do engagement bait posts still work?
Less and less. LinkedIn said in March 2026 that its feed now cuts engagement bait such as "comment to agree" prompts. Ask a real question instead, one you want to read the answers to.
The short version
Choose the result first, then the idea, then the platform. Build reach on TikTok and Reels, conversations on LinkedIn and Facebook, and trust everywhere. Grade every post against the median for its own platform, and keep the ideas that beat it.
