Meta product browsing: how to opt out before 28 October (and what's actually confirmed)
Meta is adding product browsing to existing Facebook and Instagram ads on 28 October unless you opt out. What the email says, what Meta's own Help Center confirms, which ads to opt out, and a checklist that works whichever version of the rollout is true.
Short answer: from 28 October 2026, Meta adds product browsing to your existing Facebook and Instagram ads unless you opt out. You can opt out with the Opt out button in Meta's email before that date, or switch the setting off per ad at any time. Opt out every ad whose landing page does the selling.
Product browsing is a Meta setting that can show people an in-app page with product details and suggestions from your catalog after they tap your ad, before they reach your website. Meta's own description of the setting says it "may send people to an experience on Facebook and Instagram first before your website" (Meta Business Help Center, About Advantage+ creative). The setting existed before. What changes on 28 October is the default for ads that are already running.
Black Friday is on 27 November 2026, so the switch lands 30 days before the busiest weeks of the year. Meta has published no Help Center article, newsroom post or changelog entry about the switch itself (we checked all three on 19 October). Everything about the date comes from the email.
What did Meta's product browsing email actually say?
Meta's email says: "Starting October 28, 2026, we'll add product browsing to your existing ads." Media buyers posted it on LinkedIn from 14 October, among them David Herrmann and Cathal Boyle. The first posts went up on 14 October (UTC), so the email went out around 13 to 14 October.
The email makes four points:
- What changes: "When people tap your ad, they may see an experience on Facebook or Instagram with product info and personalized suggestions."
- Why: "On average, businesses saw 3% more conversions with in-app product browsing experiences compared to campaigns that didn't use product browsing."
- The test behind the 3%: the footnote dates the experiment to 6 to 21 August 2026, "across ~117,700 advertisers globally, spanning 3+ verticals (incl. E-commerce, CPG, Retail)", and says product browsing "outperformed with >99% confidence".
- How to say no: "Opt out before October 28, 2026 below. You can also turn product browsing on or off anytime in your Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings."
The UK English version reads "Starting on 28 October 2026" and "personalised", with the Meta logo on top, which shows it arrived as an email.
The Opt out button opens Meta Business Suite. Herrmann posted the link: business.facebook.com/latest/home?asset_id=…&business_id=…&pb_auto_upgrade_optout=1&pb_auto_upgrade_optout_surface=email_deeplink. The link carries both a business id and an asset id, so it does not tell you whether one click covers one ad account or the whole business portfolio.

Add as preferred sourceWhat's confirmed, what's disputed and what nobody knows yet
Checked on 19 October 2026. Primary means Meta's own page or the email itself. Everything else is reported by advertisers.
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Product browsing is added to existing ads from 28 October 2026 unless you opt out | Confirmed (the email) | Herrmann, LinkedIn |
| You can opt out with the email's button before 28 October, or per ad at any time | Confirmed (the email) | Herrmann, LinkedIn |
| The notice arrived by email | Confirmed: six public screenshots of the email, four advertisers say they got it by email | Cathal Boyle, Kev Heuer |
| The setting is called "Add product browsing" in Advantage+ creative, and "product browsing" under Personalized destinations | Confirmed (Meta Help Center) | About Advantage+ creative, About personalized destinations |
| Meta's 3% lift | Meta's own figure; the conversion event, attribution window and test design are not published | the email's footnote |
| A notice also appears inside Ads Manager | Unverified: two blogs say so, we found no first-hand report or screenshot | AdRiseLab |
| One Opt out click covers your whole business portfolio | Disputed: the link carries a business id and an asset id; the email reached some accounts and not others | Herrmann, X, Kev Heuer, X |
| Duplicating an ad switches product browsing back on | Reported first-hand by advertisers, not stated by Meta | Jamie Shuker, X |
| New ads created after 28 October have it on by default | Unknown: the email does not say | the email |
| An API opt-out for ads created by tools | Unknown: no field reported | Relevant Audience |
What this means for a brand: plan as if the narrow reading is true. Treat each ad account as needing its own opt-out, and check new and duplicated ads by hand.
Where is the product browsing setting in Ads Manager?
Meta's Help Center puts product browsing in two places. In the Advantage+ creative enhancements, it is called Add product browsing (About Advantage+ creative). In the ad's Destination section, it is one of the Personalized destinations, next to Shops, optimize website destination and browser add-ons, and you click Edit below Personalized destinations to turn each one on or off (About personalized destinations). The coverage gave three different labels for this setting. Each one was partly right.
Personalized destinations appear for campaigns with Sales as the objective and Website as the conversion location (About ad destinations). Meta also writes that "some of these features may be turned on by default". So a Sales campaign that sends people to your site is where to look first.

What does product browsing do to your ads and spend?
Advertisers who had product browsing on before the switch report that it can turn a creative into a catalog ad. Cathal Boyle posted a Current.ie video ad next to "what most of the spend goes towards": a catalog carousel of the same glasses (LinkedIn, 14 October 2026).
Chandra Bhanu of Beyond Ads pulled spend by product_id for one D2C footwear brand (LinkedIn, 17 October 2026):
- Before: 1.7% of spend on non-catalog ads went to product units, 15 September to 7 October.
- After new ads launched on 8 October: 17.2%, while older ad sets that kept running stayed at 0%.
- Return: across 16 ads with real unit spend, the product units returned 1.42 against 2.98 for the rest, on Meta's attribution.
What this means for a brand: the ad you think is winning may be a catalog ad wearing its name. Ads Manager has no column for it, so you only see it in a product_id breakdown.
David Herrmann describes the same thing from client accounts: "almost all our traffic on an ad we thought was working was in fact just a collection ad on IG Reels", which their Meta rep confirmed (LinkedIn, 14 October 2026).
Meta's 3% counts conversions. It says nothing about order value or margin. If shoppers pick a cheaper item from the suggestions, you get more orders and less profit. When an advertiser asked Meta's own AI assistant, the answer was to turn product browsing off for full control over where clicks land (screenshot posted by Herrmann). It is a chatbot answer, not Meta documentation.
Which ads should you opt out of product browsing?
Opt out every ad whose landing page does the selling or is under test. Test product browsing only on product or collection pages backed by an accurate catalog, on a few ad sets with their own budget. Use the table from the top: the first rule that fits decides.
| Your ad's situation | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A landing page or creative test runs through November | Opt out | Product browsing changes the first screen after the tap and spoils the test |
| No catalog connected, or the catalog has wrong prices, stock or images | Opt out | The in-app page is built from the catalog |
| Advertorial or pre-sell page | Opt out | The story on the page makes the sale (what an advertorial page does) |
| Quiz funnel | Opt out | The quiz picks the product; a suggestion feed skips it |
| Bundle builder | Opt out | Suggestions can pull shoppers to single, cheaper items |
| Lead form or booking page | Opt out | Product browsing is built for purchases, not leads |
| Sales close on WhatsApp, by phone or in DMs | Opt out | The conversation is the conversion |
| Single-product store | Opt out | The landing page carries the whole sale, and a suggestion feed has little else to show |
| Product page or collection page, accurate catalog, no test running | Test on a few ad sets | Keep it only where margin after ad spend holds |
Three worked cases. A quiz funnel with a good catalog and no test running: opt out, because the quiz does the selling. A collection page with an accurate catalog and no test: test product browsing on a few ad sets. A product page with a good catalog but a test running: opt out until the test ends.
If your ads send people to advertorials, our advertorial examples show the kind of page product browsing would skip.
How to opt out of Meta product browsing (a checklist that works either way)
This checklist holds whichever version of the rollout is true: one account or the whole portfolio, email only or email plus Ads Manager.
- Find who got the email. It went to at least one user on some ad accounts and not on others (Kev Heuer). Ask your team, your agency and any contractor.
- Press Opt out for every ad account the email names, before 28 October. Do not assume one click covers the portfolio.
- Per ad, turn off Add product browsing in the Advantage+ creative enhancements.
- Per ad, turn off product browsing under Destination, Personalized destinations, Edit. Check optimize website destination and Shops while you are there.
- For many ads, use bulk edit. Ads tab, tick the ads, open the menu next to Edit, choose Advantage+ creative, then Edit all selected ads. All selected ads need the same ad format (Meta Help Center).
- Lock the product set on any ad where you keep catalog features on.
- Recheck every new and duplicated ad. Advertisers report that duplicating an ad switches product browsing back on (Jamie Shuker).
- Edit outside peak hours. Editing a live ad can send it back to review (StoreHero).
- Log each change with the date, so a November drop can be traced to you, your agency or Meta.
- Recheck on 29 October. Open your top ads and confirm the setting is still off.

After 28 October: how to check product browsing is really off
Compare 14 days before 28 October with 14 days after, on the same ad sets, as AdRiseLab suggests:
- Link clicks against landing page views. A widening gap means people stop at an in-app screen.
- Link clicks against GA4 or Shopify sessions from Meta. Same signal, from your own analytics.
- Spend by product_id on ads that are not catalog ads. Any spend on product units means catalog features are still on somewhere (Chandra Bhanu's method).

Where does Selzee fit?
Selzee reads your website and your product catalog (from Shopify or Shoptet) and makes the ads from them. It does not publish ads to Meta or change any Meta setting, so the opt-out above is yours to do. If you keep every tap going to your own landing page, the ad has to earn that tap: our guide to static ads shows what works on Meta now.
FAQ
How do I turn off product browsing on Meta ads?
Press Opt out in Meta's email before 28 October, then turn off Add product browsing in the ad's Advantage+ creative settings and product browsing under Destination, Personalized destinations. For many ads at once, use bulk edit in Ads Manager. Make ads for the page that sells, free.
Will new ads have product browsing on after October 28?
Meta's email does not say. Meta's Help Center says some personalized destinations "may be turned on by default", and one agency saw catalog units take spend on new ads it launched in October. Check every new ad by hand. Start building new ads with Selzee.
Does the opt-out cover all my ad accounts?
Nobody has confirmed it. The Opt out link carries both a business id and an asset id, and the email reached some ad accounts and not others. Opt out in every account the email names and check each one. Try Selzee on your brand.
Can I still opt out after October 28?
Yes, per ad. The email says you can turn product browsing on or off "anytime" in Advantage+ creative and Destination settings. After 28 October the email's button may no longer work, so you work ad by ad or with bulk edit. Make your next ads with Selzee.
I didn't get the email. Am I affected?
Possibly. Advertisers report the email reached at least one user on some accounts and none on others, and one says it goes to accounts with a catalog connected. Check your Sales campaigns that send people to your website. Start free with Selzee.
Does product browsing show my competitors' products?
Meta has not said so. Meta describes the page as "product info and personalized suggestions", and its Help Center says it features "product details, offers and more". One agency blog claims competitors can appear, without a source. See ads built from your own products.
Does product browsing affect lead generation or service ads?
Mostly not. Meta lists personalized destinations, product browsing among them, for Sales campaigns with Website as the conversion location. A lead form or booking page should still be checked and opted out if the setting shows up. Make ads for your business with Selzee.
