Holiday ads: what each ad has to do from Thanksgiving to January

Holiday ads for a US DTC brand, planned by the job each ad does in the season: gift guide, Black Friday offer, shipping cut-off, gift card and January. With real 2023 to 2025 examples, a week-by-week 2026 calendar and the break-even math.

If you run a DTC brand on Meta and TikTok, you have to decide which ad runs on November 10, which one on December 18, and which one on January 2.

Each of those dates needs a different ad, because the buyer has a different problem on each. This post plans the season by those jobs, with real US examples from 2023 to 2025 and a week-by-week calendar for 2026. If you came for the famous Christmas TV campaigns and what they teach about story, read our companion post on Christmas ads.

What does a holiday ad have to do for a DTC brand?

A holiday ad has one job at a time, and the job changes every two or three weeks. Between Thanksgiving and New Year a US DTC brand needs five kinds of ad: a gift guide, a Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer, a shipping cut-off ad, a gift card ad and a January ad. One "holiday creative" that runs from November to December does all five badly.

How big is the season?

US shoppers spent $257.8 billion online from November 1 to December 31, 2025, up 6.8% year on year (Adobe Digital Insights, 2026). Cyber Monday alone took $14.25 billion and Black Friday $11.8 billion (Adobe, 2025).

The money is spread over two months, and Cyber Week is only the peak. Brands that spend the whole budget on four days leave most of the season to others.

Where do holiday shoppers find gifts?

Meta's 2026 holiday guide, based on an Ipsos survey of 14,473 holiday shoppers in 18 countries in November 2025, says 94% of shoppers who use Meta technologies look to creators for holiday shopping advice, and 78% have bought directly in-app (Meta, 2026). On TikTok, 1 in 3 users say they need help or inspiration to find holiday gifts (TikTok, 2025).

What this means for a DTC brand: a large part of the holiday audience has not picked a gift yet. Your first ads should answer "what do I get them", and the discount can wait.

When should each holiday ad run in 2026?

In 2026 Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 (US Office of Personnel Management), so Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 4 and ends on December 12 (Hebcal). For delivery by December 25 in the lower 48 states, USPS recommends shipping by December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express (USPS, 2026).

Week (2026) Ad job Format Offer
Oct 12 to Nov 1 Test angles before costs rise Creator videos on Reels and TikTok, carousels by recipient No discount, or an early-access sign-up
Nov 2 to Nov 22 Gift guide Carousel "gifts for him under $50", creator unboxing, static cards by recipient Bundles, free gift wrap
Nov 23 to Nov 30 Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer Static offer card, short video with the price on screen, TikTok LIVE The one big discount of the season
Dec 1 to Dec 13 Gift guide, round two, and Hanukkah Reworked winners from November, "still time" angles Smaller discount, gift sets
Dec 14 to Dec 17 Shipping cut-off Static date card, text message or notes layout "Order by Dec 17"
Dec 18 to Dec 25 Express, local pickup and gift card Native formats (notes, chat), short video Free upgrade to express, e-gift card sent the same minute
Dec 26 to Jan 10 January UGC, "new year" angles, gift card reminders New-customer bundle, gift card top-up

Why start before November?

Meta's guide tells advertisers to set up campaigns early, because the learning phase of its AI optimization takes time, and campaigns that are live before Q4 start it with combinations that are already proven (Meta, 2026). Find your winning hook in October, when a test is cheap, and scale it in November.

How should a gift guide ad work?

A gift guide ad answers one question: what do I get this person? The best ones name the person ("for the dad who has everything") and show the gift in that person's hands.

Etsy, "Where's Waldo?" (2024)

Etsy opened its 2024 season on November 1 with a campaign built on Waldo, the character in the striped sweater. Etsy's chief brand officer, Brad Minor, described him as "always being spotted in a crowd but never truly known". The campaign by Orchard ran on TV, out of home and social (MediaPost, 2024). The anthem film on Etsy's YouTube channel ends with a personal gift that shows a friend really knows him.

The move to borrow: sell the feeling of the person who opens the gift. A candle brand writes "for the friend who never lights the good candles" and leaves the wax type for the product page.

What it looks like on Meta and TikTok

On Meta, use a carousel with one card per recipient, each with a price ("under $40") and the gift in use. On TikTok, a creator walks through "what I'm getting my sister" in 20 seconds and holds each product up to the camera.

What makes a Black Friday and Cyber Monday ad work?

A Black Friday ad has to say the offer in the first second, with the end date. The buyer is comparing ten tabs. If the discount and the deadline are not on screen at once, they scroll on.

Target, "The Latest: Black Friday Deals Edition" (2024)

On November 25, 2024, Target posted a 29-second vertical video, The Latest: Black Friday Deals Edition, filmed in the store from a shopper's basket. Each shot carries one deal as a sticker on screen, such as 30% off adult sleepwear or up to 50% off toys and tech. The description says the deals end November 30 (Target, 2024).

A frame from Target's 2024 Black Friday Deals Edition video: a pink Target basket in a store aisle, with a red sticker reading 30% off Adult Sleepwear over the shot

The move to borrow: one deal per shot, written on the screen, with the end date in the caption. The video looks like a shopper's own TikTok.

What it looks like on Meta and TikTok

On Meta, use a static offer card with the product, price before and after, end date. On TikTok, live shopping matters at this point. TikTok says brands and sellers that hosted livestreams over BFCM 2025 saw 84% sales growth year on year, and TikTok Shop sales passed $500 million over the four days (TikTok, 2025).

What this means for a DTC brand: if you sell on TikTok Shop, one live session on Black Friday is worth planning. Put a time on it and announce it in your ads the week before.

Why do native formats work in a crowded week?

In Cyber Week every feed is full of red price stickers. An ad that looks like a note, a chat answer or a text message reads as content, so people stop on it before they see it is an ad. Selzee made the ad below for AITHIMETRY as a chat answer on a phone screen. The same layout works for a holiday question such as "what do I get my mom who has everything?"

A Selzee-made ad for AITHIMETRY styled as a chat answer on a phone: a question bubble, an answer about AI governance and an Ask anything bar

How do you sell after the shipping cut-off?

The shipping cut-off ad makes one point: the date. In 2026 the USPS date for Ground Advantage is December 17. Run "order by December 17" from December 14, then switch the message the day after, to express, pickup or a gift card.

DoorDash, "No One Has to Know" (2024 and 2025)

In December 2024 DoorDash ran "No One Has to Know", spots about people saved at the last minute by a Dasher. In "Caroler", a dad's gift delivery is nearly discovered, so the Dasher sings "Silent Night" off key to cover it (Ads of the World, 2024). The description of a spot from the campaign on DoorDash's YouTube channel says the holiday deals end December 24.

In 2025 DoorDash went one step further. On December 20 and 21 it ran a social sweepstakes for people whose gifts would be late because of shipping delays, with up to $100,000 in replacement gifts (MediaPost, 2025).

The move to borrow: turn the cut-off into the story. A DTC brand cannot deliver in an hour. It can say "ships by Friday if you order today", or offer local pickup.

Does last-minute demand really exist?

Yes, and it moves to pickup. Adobe found that curbside pickup peaked on December 23, 2025, at 39.0% of online orders (Adobe, 2026). If you have a shop, a stockist or a pickup point, the last three days before Christmas are the time to advertise it.

When should you switch to gift card ads?

Switch to gift card ads the day after your last shipping date. A digital gift card is the only product you can still deliver on December 24. The NRF found that 43% of shoppers planned to buy at least one gift card in 2025, the second most popular gift, with gift card spending expected to reach $29 billion (NRF, 2025).

More than 4 in 10 shoppers plan to buy a gift card anyway. Your gift card ad decides whether that card carries your name.

What a gift card ad should show

Show the moment the card arrives: a phone screen with your brand's card in the email, and a line such as "Sent in one minute. Spent on whatever they love." Keep the price of entry low ($25 or $50) and add a small bonus if your margin allows, such as a $10 card for the buyer.

What should a January ad say?

A January ad sells to two people: the one who got a gift card and the one who is starting something new. Both have money or a reason to spend, and fewer brands are bidding against you.

Peloton, "Something is Everything" (2024)

Peloton published Something is Everything on its YouTube channel on January 1, 2024. Stink Studios, which made it, describes the message as setting goals that fit your own life, under the line "Doing something, is everything" (Stink Studios, 2024). It sells a new-year start without guilt, which is the tone a January buyer wants.

Returns are a January chance

Adobe reports that returns were up 4.7% from December 26 to 31, 2025 (Adobe, 2026). Buyers come back to your site that week anyway. An ad that offers an exchange with a small bonus keeps part of the money a refund would lose.

Does a holiday discount still pay when CPMs rise?

Only if you check it before you set the discount. Over BFCM 2025 Triple Whale measured that Meta CPMs rose 7.6% year on year to $22.26 (Triple Whale, 2025). Its full-year benchmark puts the median Meta CPM at $15.06 from August 2025 to July 2026 (Triple Whale, 2026). The two figures cover different periods, but they show the direction: in Cyber Week each thousand impressions costs more.

In that week, each ad costs more and the discount also cuts your margin.

A worked example

Take a product that sells for $80 and costs $40 to make, ship and process. Its margin is 50%, so break-even ROAS is 1 divided by 0.5, which is 2.0. Now give 25% off. The price is $60, the costs stay at $40, and the margin falls to $20, or 33%. Break-even ROAS rises to 3.0. Your ads must now bring 50% more revenue per dollar, in a week when each impression costs more.

So a 25% discount can lose money while the sales report looks great. Put your own numbers into the calculator below, with and without the discount, before you choose the offer.

How Selzee makes holiday ads for your brand

The calendar above has 7 rows over 13 weeks, so it needs at least 7 ads. A small team often runs one ad for the whole season. Selzee researches your market, your customers and the ads running longest for other brands, then recreates the winning ads for your brand with your products, logo, fonts and colors. Every ad comes with the angle and the insight it is built on, so you can see which ad is for the gift guide week and which one is for the cut-off.

The ad below is one Selzee made for itself, in the Notes app format that works in a busy feed.

Holiday ads: FAQ

When should holiday ads start?

Start testing in mid-October and launch gift guide ads in the first week of November. Meta's 2026 holiday guide advises setting up campaigns early, because its AI optimization needs time to learn before the peak. Cheap tests in October give you proven ads for November.

What is the best holiday ad format on Meta?

There is no single best one; each job has its own. A carousel by recipient fits the gift guide, a static offer card fits Black Friday, and a native layout such as a note or a chat answer fits the last two weeks, when feeds are full of price stickers.

Is Black Friday 2026 on November 27?

Yes. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26, so Black Friday is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30.

What is the last shipping day for Christmas 2026?

USPS recommends December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express, for delivery by December 25 in the contiguous US. Check your own carrier and warehouse, and set your ad cut-off a day earlier.

Should a DTC brand give a discount for Black Friday?

Only if the discounted order still clears your break-even ROAS. A 25% discount on a 50%-margin product raises break-even ROAS from 2.0 to 3.0, while CPMs rise in the same week. A gift with purchase or a bundle often protects the margin better.

Plan the ads before the dates arrive

Write the calendar first, then make one ad for each row. The ad for December 18 is the one brands forget. If your competitors still run "order now" that day, a clear "too late to ship, here is what still works" ad stands out.
