Canva MCP: how to connect Claude to Canva and design ads in chat

What the Canva MCP server is, how to connect Claude to Canva in four steps, what Claude can do with your designs once it is in, which Canva plan each tool needs, and where the ad idea comes from.

Short answer: Canva MCP is Canva's server that lets an AI assistant work inside your Canva account. In Claude it is a connector called Canva, at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp. Add it under Customize, then Connectors, sign in to Canva, and Claude can search your designs, generate new ones, fill brand templates and export files from the chat.

Below are the setup steps, prompts to try for ads, the Canva plan each tool needs, and the one thing the connector cannot do: tell you which ad to make.

What is the Canva MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard Claude uses to call tools in other apps. Canva runs two different MCP servers, and most of the confusion in search results comes from mixing them up.

The Canva AI Connector works on your designs

The one a marketer wants is the Canva AI Connector. In Claude's directory it is listed as Canva, made by Canva, marked as verified by Anthropic, and added in November 2025 (Claude connector directory, 2026). Its line on that page is short: "Search, create, autofill, and export Canva designs."

The Canva Dev MCP server is for app developers

The second one is the Canva Dev MCP server. It runs on your own computer with npx -y @canva/cli@latest mcp, needs Node.js 24 or later, and helps a coding agent build Canva apps with Canva's developer SDK (Canva Developers, Dev MCP server, 2026). It does not open your designs. Canva's own page sends anyone who wants help with designs to the AI Connector instead.

If a guide asks you to install Node.js to "connect Claude to Canva", it is describing the developer server. For ads, you need neither Node.js nor a terminal.

How do you connect Claude to Canva?

You add the connector once on the web or in Claude Desktop, then switch it on in the chats where you want it. Anthropic says directory connectors work for every Claude user, free plan included (Anthropic, Use the connectors directory, 2026).

Add the Canva connector in four steps

Step Where What you do
1 Claude, Customize, then Connectors Click the + next to Connectors to open the directory
2 Directory Find Canva, read what it does, click Connect
3 Canva sign-in page Sign in to the Canva account that holds your brand's designs, then allow access
4 A new chat Click + in the lower left, hover over Connectors, switch Canva on

Pick the right Canva account in step 3. If you keep client work in a team account and your own drafts in a personal one, Claude only sees the account you signed in with, and every "find my summer sale designs" request runs against that one.

Team and Enterprise plans need an owner first

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds Canva under Organization settings, then Connectors, Browse connectors, Add to your team. Each person then signs in to Canva on their own; adding the connector gives nobody access by itself, per the same Anthropic page. On the Canva side, a team admin may also need to allow AI tools before members can connect.

Once you set it up on the web or in Claude Desktop, the connector also shows up in the Claude mobile app the next time you sign in there.

What can Claude do in Canva once it is connected?

Claude's directory lists 17 tools for the Canva connector. They fall into four jobs. Canva's own tool reference lists more, including the brand template and autofill tools, so check the tool list under the connector in your Claude settings to see what your chat has today.

Find and read the designs you already have

search-designs, get-design, get-design-pages and get-design-content let Claude look through your account and read what is on each page. A useful first prompt for an ad account: "Find every design with 'Black Friday' in the title from last year and list the headline on each one." You get last year's copy back in a list, without opening 20 tabs.

Generate a new design from a prompt

generate-design makes a new design from your description, and get-design-generation-job checks on it. Be concrete about the format. "A 1080 x 1350 Instagram feed ad for a grass-fed whey protein, orange background, one headline, a Shop button" gets you closer than "a protein ad". Open the result in Canva to adjust anything the prompt missed.

Fill your brand templates with new copy

Autofill is where Canva MCP saves the most time on ads. You keep one brand template with fixed slots for the headline, the product photo and the button, and Claude fills it with new copy. Canva lists autofill-design, search-brand-templates and create-design-from-brand-template as Pro and above (Canva Developers, MCP tools and rate limits, 2026). So a prompt like "Fill our Story template with these five hooks and make five designs" needs a paid Canva plan.

Export, file and comment

export-design saves the design as a file in a format get-export-formats offers, create-folder and move-item-to-folder keep a campaign together, and add-comment-thread-to-design leaves a note for whoever reviews it. An export can fail with a license error if the design uses premium elements your plan does not include.

Which Canva plan do you need for Canva MCP?

Any Canva account can connect, the free one included. The plan decides which tools answer. Canva's tool reference splits them in two:

Works on all Canva plans Needs Canva Pro and above (Pro, Business, Enterprise)
Search and read designs Autofill a design
Generate a design, generate an image Search brand templates, create from a brand template
Export a design List brand kits
Folders, comments, asset uploads Resize a design (the free plan gets a limited trial)

Canva also caps each user at 300 requests per minute across all of their MCP clients, and some tools have lower caps, such as 20 a minute for generate-design and export-design. A marketer typing prompts will not reach them. A script that loops over 400 product SKUs can.

What this means for a small brand: on a free Canva plan you can still search, generate and export. The batch job most ad teams want, one template filled with ten new hooks, starts at Pro.

How do you check a Canva ad's size before it goes live?

Ask for the size in the prompt, then check the export before you upload it. Instagram crops a feed post on the profile grid differently from how it shows it in the feed, so a headline near the edge of a 4:5 design can get cut on the profile grid. Drop the exported file into the checker below and it draws each crop on your picture. Nothing is uploaded.

Upload photo

Runs in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded or stored.

What does Canva MCP not do for your ads?

Canva makes the design you ask for. It does not know which ad is winning in your market this week, and it has no data on what your competitors run. Ask Claude with only Canva switched on for "an ad that will work for my gutter company" and you get a clean design built on a guess.

The idea still has to come from somewhere

The hard part of a paid social ad is the idea: the hook, the format, the angle. A comparison layout like the Ridge ad above, a fake phone notification, a "before and after" split. These formats spread because they work, and they stop working when everyone copies them. A design tool cannot see that cycle. An ad tool connected through its own MCP server can sit in the same chat and bring that part. Our guide to ad creative testing covers how to judge a new idea once it is live.

Brand templates make every ad look alike

A brand template keeps your ads on brand, and it also keeps them in one layout. After a month of filling the same template, every ad in your account has the same shape, and your audience stops seeing them. To fix it, switch to a new format. New words in the old slots keep the same shape.

How Selzee runs next to Canva in the same Claude chat

Selzee is an AI ad generator that finds ads winning on Meta right now and recreates them for your brand, with your products, logo, colors and fonts. It has its own MCP server at https://selzee.com/mcp, so you can switch it on in the same Claude chat as Canva: Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste the URL, sign in to Selzee and click Allow.

With both connectors on, each one does its own job:

Job Selzee tool Canva tool
Read your brand: voice, audience, products get_brand (free plan)
Find a proven ad format search_templates, read_template (paid plan)
Make a finished ad in that format make_ad (paid plan, about 120 credits)
Put the copy into your own brand template autofill-design (Canva Pro and above)
Export, file and comment for review export-design, folders, comments
Schedule to Instagram or Facebook schedule_ad (paid plan)

A real prompt for that chat: "Use Selzee to find a template with a before-and-after hook and make an ad for our protein powder. Then put the same headline into our Canva Story template." Selzee brings an idea that already works for other brands. Canva keeps it inside your house style. On the free Selzee plan, Claude can read your brand and your ads and keep or discard them; making ads, searching templates and scheduling need a paid plan.

Canva MCP: FAQ

What is the Canva MCP server URL?

The Canva AI Connector runs at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp. In Claude you do not need to paste it: add Canva from the connector directory and sign in. The URL matters only for other MCP clients. Pair it with ads Selzee makes for your brand.

Is Canva MCP free?

Connecting is free, and searching, generating and exporting designs work on every Canva plan. Autofill, brand templates and resizing need Canva Pro or above. Claude's directory connectors also work on the free Claude plan. Start Selzee on its free plan too.

How do I connect Claude to Canva?

Open Customize, then Connectors, click +, pick Canva and click Connect. Sign in to Canva and allow access. Then switch Canva on in a chat from the + menu, under Connectors. Add Selzee to the same chat for ad ideas.

What is the difference between the Canva AI Connector and the Canva Dev MCP server?

The AI Connector works on your designs: search, generate, autofill, export. The Dev MCP server runs on your computer and helps developers build Canva apps. It never opens your designs. Get ads made for your brand with Selzee.

Can Claude tell me which Canva ad will perform best?

Not from Canva alone. Canva makes the design you describe, and it has no data on which ads win in your market. Selzee starts from ads that are working on Meta right now and recreates them for your brand. See the ads Selzee would make for you.
